Turbo Care

Hi All,

What are the views of those on the board about leaving the engine running for a minute or so at the the end of using the car to let oil circulate round the turbos I have a 996 TT.

Wondered what other people did or if there is some clever stuff the Porsche does to save me having to do this.

Do you leave your car idling after every Journey?

I would assume if 0.0bar is shown then the Turbo's haven't been used and so it would be safe if for the previous few miles that has been the case they would have cooled. (I am happy to be corrected on that point as it is an assumption)
 
But even though no Boost is shown the hot gasses are still passing through the Turbos are they not ?

I looked in the manual as I always believed that it was good practice just to let the engine run over for a short while prior to stopping, the manual goes on about no need to pre warm the engine before moving off but nothing about when stopping.

I couldn't find any mention in the manual either but know from others whom have had other turbos about the practice of a bit of idle time
 
I know John, as he says above, does it and he's told me to always have that little rest at the end of the journey for the turbo's sake. Better to always be safe than sorry.

Really I know he's just having a last listen and a bit of quiet time with the car before the big switch off. [;)]
 
I have wondered about this as well.
The user manual makes no mention of running the car after stopping, and I asked at the OPC who also said that it was unnecessary. I had considered a turbo timer, bit I am not sure you need one.

However, having driven Japanese turbo cars for 6 years previously, I have it ingrained in me to run it for 30-60 secs when stopping after hard usage. It is only really necessary if the car has been driven hard, pootling around town at 30 is not going to be a problem.

I can't see that it can do any harm to treat it with a bit of care, so even if it is not strictly necessary, I do it anyway.

I'm coming in late with this one, as have missed the forum due to work commitments!
I always let it tick over for few minutes if I have thrashed the car, but don't if it has just been driven normally.
This subject was covered in some detail on Rennlist a good while ago, with a Porsche specialist recommending that you always let it cool, due to the number of "blue" Turbo's he had seen whilst doing engine work.
