Turbo decat

I'd like to remove the cat from my turbo's exhaust, could I cut it out and replace it with a straight piece of pipe or just knock the insides of the cat out ?.
 
I would replace with a straight bit of pipe, but it will probably drone like hell though....ask me how i know lol
 
I have a used decat exhaust section that I bought thinking mine wasn't decatted. I since found out that what I thought was the cat isn't at all.

Mine was cut out and replaced with a straight pipe, it made it slightly noisier but not uncomfortable
 
I fitted a Hayward & Scott decat front section to mine and it didn't make it noisy at all. Turbo whistle was significantly increased (in other words it could be heard with the decat when it couldn't before). The car got noisy when the tailpipe broke off, but then I fitted the rest of the H&S system and it was quiet again. I think from the outside it was deeper but not especially loud (Tony F commented on it once many, many years ago as I recall).

If you're really worried you could have the cat replaced with a resonator or small silencer, but in my experience it isn't necessary. You will notice quicker spooling of the turbo without the cat - not dramatically, but noticeably all the same.

I'm not too worried about some extra noise, in fact if anything the car is a bit too quiet at the moment, but as I'm a tight git I'd like to try and modify the standard system rather than replacing parts of it, what does it sound like when the wastegate outlet isn't plumbed into the exhaust ?, pretty noisy I expect.

It did with mine.

I had the car back from it's engine rebuild and had put 1000 miles on it when I took it back for a checkover and post run-in oil change. The only other work done was to replace the front box with a straight through pipe and instantly I noticed a better throttle response and quicker spooling. Bear in mind my exhaust severely strangles the larger engine anyway so removing any restriction helps it.

I think cats were standard from the 250 cars onwards though you could have it deleted at the factory at no cost and many of them were. A cat has a box with curved edges were it transitions from the pipe, a silencer box has 90 degree edges (if that makes sense[&:])

Just had a look under my car and it does have the square edges on the front box, looks like I don't have a cat after all.
