Turbo decat.

I'm going to dismantle the exhaust system on the Turbo at some point to fix all the leaks and bodges. It still has the original cat fitted, which isn't required in the UK. I was considering either removing it and fitting a decat pipe or gutting the cat housing and refitting for the original look. I'm guessing this won't have a detrimental effect, and may improve spool up a little? Has anyone done this, as I was interested to know if it creates a lot more exhaust noise, which I'm not really interested in having, but don't mind if it's not excessive.
 
I did this on my S2 and it changed the note (which I liked) but its still not a little boy racer thing, and probably only really noticeable to me when I have the roof down
