Turbo Distributor cap - retaining screws.

Now I remember what a pain this was last time I did it. Does anybody have any tips for easy ways to get the bottom retaining screw done up for the distributor cap? It has that dang spring, I can't see it, I can only get a short screwdriver in there, and I have not clear way of which way to turn it or what to feel for... [:mad:]

The way I used to do my 1984 2.5 dizzy cap was look at where it fitted beforehand to see the orientation the hooked bolt on the cap and see in which direction (clockwise or anticlockwise and how far) it had to be turned to lock it. The job was made easier by disconnecting the five leads (write down the positions) and using a short screwdriver blade from a broken screwdriver and a pair of small vise-grips clamped onto it. I also found it easier to locate and lock the bottom one first.

Porsche actually advise modifying a screwdriver to put a right angle on it. Or use a really long one but watch the paintwork on the nose cone panel. If it is worn (and probably will be) you may struggle.
 
I've found it to be one of those jobs that just gets easier the more you do it!

I have developed 2 tricks:

1) Mark the screw head with a tiny bit of tippex aiming towards the 'point' of the locking bar/end.

2) Buy one of these:

I made up my own special tool for this - A length of bar ground screwdriver-like at the business end, and a tommy bar at the other, just the right length to fit in behind the light bar. The tommy bar makes it easy to know you have turned it quarter of a turn. There aren't huge forces involved, so it doesn't have to be hardened or anything technical.
 
Thanks guys. I will try again tonight. I must be honest I was being lazy and not taking all the ht leads off. I think last time I spent some time working out how it needed to turn etc. I have one of these small screw drivers. It is still a bit long to get my hand behind. I also like the idea of marking with some paint or something.

As for doing it more often, it's usually been done by a garage before... Actually I only removed it to get a better view of the banjo bolt in my other post!

Done! Definitely quicker to label all the ht leads and take them off than struggle with them on! Lesson learned....
 
I also use a stubby screwdriver, bit it is still a major PITA ! I will try the ratchet method next time [:mad:]
