Turbo exhausts

Are these stainless steel or not? I've read both I think?
My tail pipe is a bit rusty (so not SS?) but apart from that quite sound. So can I get a shiny cover or should I be looking at tidying up what I have?
My loan S has a louder exhaust that I don't really like - good job I found out as I was about to pitch into the bidding for the Borla one on ebay, but I am aware that there are better flowing systems than the stock one.
Do all aftermarket ones make more noise? Is it more power equals more noise?
Thanks
David

The standard rear box is stainless steel but the actual tailpipe inside the shiny trim is not and it eventually rusts away (after 20 years so it's pretty good). If you could get a new tail welded on it would still be serviceable

With a turbocarged car you want to exit the exhaust gases as quickly as possible so the turbo can spool up quicker and make more boost. In this case bigger is better and you don't need to be so concerned with back pressure like you do with a normally aspirated car. A simple pipe with no silencer boxes would be best but obviously the noise would be rather unsubtle - see Ricks car for an example [;)]

I will shortly be replacing my turbo exhaust system so will be selling my 3 year old Dansk SS rear box and also the front pipe that has had the cat deleted with a straight through pipe. It is slightly noisier than standard but much quieter than a normally aspirated car with the front box deleted. It's not a sports system as such so don't expect huge gains, but the cat delete did make a noticeable difference. I'll be looking for £150 the pair if you're interested (or £75 each if I can find 2 people for front and back [:)] )

my tailpipe rusted through as well - It fell off halfway round the nurburgring [:(] - I got a replacement tip fitted - cheap but a bit of a bodge. I wish you'd mentioned that backbox 6 weeks ago Paul... [:D]

The new tip has made quite a difference to hte exhaust noise - suprising really. With the MAF the car sounds great on the track now...[:D]

The tailpipes are also stainless but the covers are not and trap moisture - stainless will rust eventually. I welded on a section of round pipe as a temp fix on my original back box - worked fine.

Paul, do you think you could measure your turbine outlet and your (future?) downpipe?
It would help me put them into perspective with mine.
(mine are :
downpipe : Inner diameter 61 mm / Outer diameter 64 mm
the diameter of the turbine outlet on my custom turbo is 57 mm)

Hi Paul,

Interested in the exhaust you are likely to be selling. Particularly the front part for Cat delete. My Cat's heatshield broke up the other day and had to be taken off completely, so I'm a bit concerned about heat. I'm also thinking forward to a DPW (Tial looks a good unit / price) so may do the two things together.

Does the Dansk rear box make it a louder / 'Froatier' ?

Do you have a date in mind or just interested in taking names of people interested?

Cheers,
Eddy

Paul, what exhaust are you going to fit?

Jon Mitchell has persuaded me to have his new 9XX 3.0" stainless steel system including a 3" turbo discharge pipe

LIL is down there having it fitted now which is why my old one should be spare in a few weeks time

As they are built to order you can specify whatever tailpipe you want. Mine will be the same oval as standard, but ever so sligtly larger. You can of course have a 6x4 bucket like Tony and John that requires checking for illegal aliens whenever you cross the channel [:D]

The front pipe with cat delete is still available at £75, but the rear box has now sold

(Eddy I've sent you an email but had no reply)

Hold on a moment []. Just because I posted a link to his page doesn't mean you all have to call him and distract him from working on my car
