Turbo - fuel consumption ?

HI all;
just doing some research here - I'm thinking of getting a Cayenne;
Realistically it's either going to be either an S or a Turbo, probably 2-3 years old.

Under normal daily driving, what sort of fuel consumption are you guys with the Turbo's getting ?
When I say normal, I would estimate around 80% motorway (70-85mph ave) the rest suburban.

I know what I can get out of an S, as I've had one for a couple of days whilst my 997S was in the OPC.

I'd prefer the Turbo (duh...), but somewhat worried that furel consumption will be a killer !

Brave man! I would question the Yorkshireman thing though! As all the Yorkshiremen I know including myself all have deep pockets and short arms!

I gave up after a year of £150/ week on diesel in my Rangerover at 22mpg. Gordon Brown was laughing all the way to the bank!

Also don't forget the turbo will cost you a litre of mobil 1 every week as well!

I am currently getting approx 17 mpg (last 1600 miles), however that is mainly A roads and I tend to use the car as intended. On motorway journeys I get about 21 mpg.

The turbo does use oil, but it is no where near as bad as beavercraig has stated.

There is no comparision between the S and the turbo and at the end of the day there is very little to call on petrol consumption.
 
Yep was exagerating somewhat on the oil consumption. My 996tt uses 1 ltr of oil every 1200 miles or so.
OPC told me when I test drove new 2007 Cayenne Turbo at launch to expect double that consumption on oil, so 1litre every 600 miles.
I am just tight and can't live with 35,000 miles a year at 20mpg otherwise I would have one myself. And yep am jealous, would love two turbo's on the drive!
 
i would say go for a diesel tow rag or a diesel x5 if fuel economy in this class of car is a top priority...i swapped the wife`s S to a turbo S, and only really see a difference when i`m behind the wheel!!
 
Fuel economy isn't the top proirity - I was asking that question to gauge what the real life figures are.
I like to have all the info to hand before making a decision ! ( and justifying it to the wife...)

Most of the journeys in the car would be relatively long distance, circa 200 miles, but relatively infrequent.

Total annual mileage probably wouldnt excede around 15K.

that's because the other 12K is done in the 997S !

Any more real life turbo stories ? any potential pitfalls to be aware of with the Turbo model over the S ?
(other than a thirst for oil...!)

The one thing I would recommend is that you get an OPC warranty for piece of mind.

If you are interested in a turbo, mine is for sale as I am moving back to something smaller but with worse fuel consumption[:D]
 
the warranty is a must in my opinion - just got car back after rear end shunt only to find that it has a noisy tappet!! doesn`t sound like big job right....it`s an engine out job... actually havent been that impressed with the build quality of this one...has had loads of little problems that i think now we are getting on top of..e.g door shut lines, prop bearings, clicky steering, noisy compartment blowers and the list goes on....itzs all worth it though on the slip road with the family packed and that pesky car who was too close(choose any because it`s rare to have anything quicker annoying you) gets left for dust...

fully loaded on a night run to torquay i kill a tank of fuel.(280 miles) each way...
 
i have the turbo and find that on the motorway the consumption is around 23 and around town once warm about 17 giving an average on the computer of 20 over 500 hours if you are intrested im thinking of selling my 2003 on 42000 shortly to upgrade love the car for long journeys hope this helps

I borrowed a new Turbo from the local OPC for the day last week - blimey it's quick !
Seems to defy physics with the PDCC system.
Couldnt really assess fuel consumtion, but I do know I couldn't get it below 10 mpg.
Just need to make a decision now which way to turn !
