turbo head needed

Well my year's routine maintenance and minor fettling has taken a turn for the worse. What started as a car that recently got a bit warm at stand still but kept good temp on the move has morphed into chg failure and now a scrap head. Its got holes in it!
So I need one, ideally crack tested and skimmed. Car is a 1990 250 car if that makes a difference, part no is 951 104 303 2R

Thanks
David

Hi David
Have you thought about getting the damage welded? there are specialist head companies out there that do this all the time, my own head had a big crack in it that required welding. I had the crack welded, then head skimmed and cleaned. Came out perfect and has been on the car for nearly two years with no issues. I'm afraid that I can't remember who I used now, nor how much, but all I did was googled 'Alloy cylinder head welding' and chose from those shown...

I know a Top Top Welder David, if you want to consider a repair.

He does a lot of High quality bespoke work that other people can't do, he's near me just inside North wales near Chester,

This is the damage. The worst hole (3rd pic) is 4mm/160 thou deep and about 8-10mm across. Repairable?

you'd have to ask the experts Dave but I've seen images and video of far worse damage than that, in some cases with large chunks of the head completely eaten away. However, having said that it's all down to cost, in most cases where heads that have had heavy damage repaired it's because the head is from a vintage car and thus a replacement is impossible, so cost doesn't really come into it. Best get a quote and compare repair price vs replacement...

good luck

Pete

I found a good 220 cylinder head last summer for £250 from Douglas Valley Breakers, might be worth a call. I think corrosion pits are actually an easier repair than cracks, mine had a crack through from the valve seat to the water jacket which is difficult to get an effective permanent repair on.

I'll send the pics to the Fab shop and see what they say, how many holes in total ?

Do you know who did the repair?

Ok David,

£150 Inc. for 6 holes to be Filled and Dye / crack checked.
I have an Interlink courier account if you wanted I can arrange a collection (recorded and insured) and re Delivery?
this would be £50 Inc.

I've known and woked with the welder for 9 years, he Specialises in Alumnium, ti, and Stainless Steel etc..
He used to Work for Honda Motorcross team UK /USA fabrication welding crankcases / cylinder heads etc,
he's worked for himself now for 10 years and does work now for the Food industry, Marine, Aviation, automotive and the medical trades.

He has welded up hundreds of cracked Aluminium wheels for me over 9 years with no comebacks.

You'd have to strip the head down, get it welded then skimmed and re assembly as opposed to your other option of finding
a 2nd hand one which may also need a strip and rebuild?
