How about that Gerry?

Nasty [:(] i presume you run an air filter ? possibly some debris left in the airbox at some time ?

sorry to see that,.....it is not pretty and it takes very little to make it happen.

The intercooler may have acted as a filter for you so don't give up, big bits missing are less of an issue than small bits.

if it happened to me I would have a compression test done to verify if the shrapnel has done any harm internally.

If you have 130psi** equally or thereabouts on all cylinders, you have probably been lucky.

Then backflush the I/C and catch the shrapnel. Clean everything. The I/C is the No1 dangerous component on your car in my book.

The turbo can be reconditioned or replaced.

+1 re: intercooler

When my car simultaneously trashed it's HG and turbo we decided to just bin the intercooler and use a known clean s/h replacement. Fortunately my bores survived unscathed. It looked like my turbo had shed it's front shaft nut and then chewed it up. Nasty nasty stuff but a full stripdown of the engine to refresh and check all was well showed no bore damage. The old IC was full of silver dust though as was the turbo hard pipes.
