Turbo or Supercharged Boxsters?

Hi all,

The Boxster is a great car but for my needs it must have more performance and I wonder if there is an aftermarket kit available?

With this in mind will it affect which Boxster I look for...? I was previously only thinking of the 3.2 S but I realise that sometimes these conversions can only be done on a specific model ie. more room with the smaller 2.7 engine so more likely to be possible to convert the car...

I can't find anything on the internet on this and I hope someone can answer my question otherwise I will have to buy a different convertible......

The engines are all the same physical size (at least the pre-gen 2 engines), the capacity differences are all internal bore/stroke difference.
There were certainly some USA cars that had the 2.5 engine super/turbocharged, but I haven't heard anything for years now.
I'm sure they are available though. Whether it's a good idea is another matter.
 
You could search out a 986 with damaged engine ( if you can find one ) and buy a 996 engine from a write off that would be pretty quick and the engine should fit without too much difficuty, you'd need a 986S 6 speed box etc plus go for the brakes from an S too. ( May as well get an early S to start ).

Other tweaks are also available, such as exhausts, engine chipping etc.

 
There was an English guy who lived in Spain who supercharged or turbocharged an early Boxster successfully. I forget his name - perhaps Mark will remember. When I had my Boxster on order for 18 months in 97/98 I used to follow Porsche Pete's Boxster Board http://www.ppbb.com/phorum/index.php which was a great source of information. They have some very good Boxster meetings in the States and used to post some great pictures.
 
Google "Parr" & Boxster. I think they are Croydon way. They do turbo conversions for Caymans & Boxsters.

If I recall that was a 996 engine in the Boxster. It was done by one of the German tuners but I remember it took a lot to get right, seemingly because he wanted the original 3 dial instrument cluster rather than the 5 dial from the 996. I think he posted on our old Yahoo group rather than PPBB - I can only find a Chris from Spain on PPBB and I don't think it was him (this is bugging me, I know exactly who you mean but can't remember his name!)

Parr and Autofarm both market TPC turbos, albeit, Parr claimed in an well published article that the Turbo upgrade was theirs, it was not it was a TPC supplied kit.

Anyway, time moves on and I now believe some credit has been passed to TPC.

Politics aside, the TPC package comes in two forms; a high and low pressure version.
