I got the car out of the garage tonight to drop the car off for mot only to be presented with a nasty metallic squealing noise coming from the fan.

Does anybody have any idea new ones are?

If you haven't already checked under the bonnet, you could check that the screws holding it in place haven't fallen out.... mine had after a recent belt check... horrible noise!

yup they stick out a bit but fit im told, cheaper from VW heritage and a choice of sizes, think ours are 280mm

the one in your link is two speed, we only need single speed as the relay and resistor packs control speed

I bought a replacement mk2 golf fan but its just too deep and fouls on the PAS belt. Comparing both fans to the new one both have some play in the shafts so I think I'm going to have to buy a pair of slim line universal fans and make them fit.

If you fit universal ones try to keep the cowl, you will loose a lot of cooling without it.

checked they are 280mm diameter and they are pull fans, I have had one apart and the nose of the shaft is a normal bearing in a riveted cage the rear is phosphor bronze

Cheers. I was planning on fitting two 10 inch pull fans in their housings and try fix them into the original cowl, I did see a few 11 inch units but figured they would be harder to secure.
