turbo rebuild necessary!

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]Booger!

Had a load of white smoke eminate from the exhaust today. Couldn't figure it out so whacked off the MAF, only to find 3mm of radial, and 1mm of axial play in the turbo. That'll be knackered then! []

Can anyone reccomend a turbo rebuild shop? I was gonna ring Turbotechnics in the morning (it's take me most of the day to get the damned thing off!). I mailed Dave @ lindsey to find out what it is (Its an old Kokeln stV, and I wasn't sure what hybrid bits have been used!). Any other suggestions for a friendly shop would be gratefully recieved!

I need a beer!

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks Andrew. That'll be universal turbos in Hampshire I guess? I think I had a rebuilt one on another car from them at some point. Not bad service. Worth a call anyhow ta!

Thanks Graeme. I'll be skipping on the LR turbos though thanks. I've been hearing things......

I think I have found a place. I'll be sure on Tuesday though (why did it have to go just before a bank holiday weekend!)

Planning ahead a bit though, I may need to find a used turbo to use the hot side casting. If anyone has a well used unit, then they could mail me. I may not need it (Won't know until at least tuesday), but it's always best to ask now!

Cheers!

Close but turbodynamics is in christchurch which is in Dorset and universal turbos is in Ringwood which is in Hampshire, One is very helpfull one slightly less so if you want anything non standard ;)
Tony
Living roughly midway between the 2 (but christchurch did use to be in Hampshire!)

Drat - I got an A for Geography O level too [8|]

Tony, I can't remember, but was it one of these you used to rebuild your Turbo (the reigning Dyno Day Top Gun of 2004 & 2005)

No mine was done by ITS in Leeds, universal were not too keen on doing non standard turbos and I didn't know about TurboDynamics back then. I did have a TD dump valve on in 04 and 05 though.

Wicked!

Got my Turbo back today. Hand delivered no less too!

I was reccomended to contact Simon Peckham by Jon Mitchell. Simon is an agent for Turbo Dynamics.

I can pretty much say I've never seen a better rebuild! The quality of the rebuild is impeccable, the service was fantastic. Simon kept me informed all the way as to what was happening, and from the first bolt being turned to the Turbo being delivered by Simon this evening by hand, including a long bank holiday weekend, the turnaround was less than two weeks. Damned good in my book! The price was pretty good too. Considering what they did to it, I was expecting to have to chop off at least two limbs.... I may be fingerless [;)] , but I can still drive!

Just an oil change to do, and I can go and play again now! [:D]

I can heartily reccomend Simon for any turbo work you need doing, and judging by the state of the 944T he turned up in, I guess it doesn't just stop at turbines! [:D]

I was pleased to help with the recommendation off list.

Simon does a very good job of spec'ing and designing a turbo, the quality is always top notch, which is why we use his turbos over any other choice now (and believe me, I have fitted them all, Lindsey, Kokeln etc)

I am sure your going to be even more impressed once you drive the car and the turbo has run in.

I predict sooner spooling up and more power at the same boost levels (due to a cooler intake charge, due to the turbo running in its efficiency band unlike the USA made items, which will cause a hotter charge)

Report back with your findings.

What chips are you using at the moment?

Also...

What spec turbo did you go for in the end? Was it a custom ball bearing hybrid or a custom hybrid?

I had the Kokeln rebuilt to the correct specs! [;)] It feels better than out the box.

We considered a different spec, but decided that as the turbo had worked for the spec I wanted and had functioned fine for the last 4 years, then a complete and comprehensive rebuild was in order over a respecced unit.

I'll have to have a look at my reciepts to find what chips I use. I honestly don't remember! [:D] I know they aren't guru ones though (Simon asked tonight aswell, and I couldn't tell him!) I *think* they are either Kokeln or Lindsey ones.....
