Turbo replacement recondition

Hi

I am new to Porsche ownership and recently purchased a 996 Turbo, I have to say I am really pleased with it and love driving it[:D] Probably going to be on here a bit with some questions though!

When I bought it I knew one of the turbos had been repaired (but working ok) and one of the jobs I would want to do is get the turbo out and get it reconditioned before the repair breaks. Has anybody tried removing and reinstalling the turbo themselves and how difficult a job is it? The specialist told me that to get the turbos out is going to need to have the engine and gearbox dropped out, is that the only way? If so has anybody had it done before and what sort of cost if I take it to the garage? as dropping the engine and gearbox is a little more than I would take on myself!

Thanks in advance
Sean

Sean!

No, you don't have to drop the engine. You have to remove the rear PU and intercoolers, but that's about it. You should then only have some extremely rusty nuts to tackle!

I haven't done it myself, but if you would like the instructions, drop me an email using the link below my avatar photo.

Need to drop the email here:)

Thanks very much, the garage suggested it needs to be dropped and around £1000 of labour.

I would love some instructions if you have them, may well have a go myself if its simple enough.

Thanks again
Sean

You'll need to drop me an email, so I can attach the instructions to a reply. The forum email system doesn't allow attachments, so I can't send you them directly using the forum email. If you send one to me, it will have your email address on it, and I can reply directly to you.

I wouldn't say it is simple, but it definitely doesn't need engine removal.
