Turbo S exhaust sound

about 6 years ago I owned the Gen 1 Turbo S and was always a bit dissapointed in its exhaust sound, but this time round the Gen 2 seems to attracts a lot of attention, the sound is really very good, my son said when I pull away hard it's actually very loud outside, I must say I often get admiring looks and comments re the sound. I seem to remember some time ago a thread about the cars gets louder as the miles creep up? Mine is on about 20,000 now, can any owner confirm this please.

Had mine from new and done 62k in it. Its hard to define that the exhaust gets any louder as I have no stats, but given that every single time I drive it I think "blimey, that's sounds loud" must be something that evidences what you've suggested. I definitely don't hanker for any aftermarket system. Like yourself probably, in sports mode people are always winding their windows down when you come past or stopping and staring. I've had a number of "tunnel" encounters with Astons, Aventadors, AMGs etc and raised a few surprised eyebrows (if/when they catch up). Wherever the notion that the 997.2 Turbo S didn't make a great noise is beyond me. I remember Autocars group supercar test when it first came out (against every other make/model) giving it #1 place, describing the exhaust note as "brutal".

Enjoy!

I always felt the Turbo both Gen 1 and 2 makes a really good sound from outside of the car- just not that much inside.
Get yourself in a tunnel to be amazed how loud it actually is!!
I was asked a fair few times if I had ever changed my exhaust on the Gen1 for a aftermarket kit- which I hadn't.
However 45K did seem to make the exhaust note sound really good, the trader who bought mine also referred to how quick it felt and thought the got better as the engine loosened up[:)]
So Yes, I think they do sound much better with some mileage on them..

Funny you say that Gary as I was looking at changing the exhaust before I let someone else drive it but now TBH it would be a waste of money as I am so impressed with the sound. Certainly I don't need or want anything louder

I had a gen 2 turbo that I always thought sounded too quiet. My son reassured me every time I came up the street that it sounded terrific....he likened it to a jet coming in. I would agree that the sound inside is quite different to the sound outside. Never dreamt of an aftermarket...

Funny that's what my kids say as well, BUT I can tell you this I borrowed a ne M4 the other day and that is terrible so synthetic, in the car it sounded ok but open the window and its was just a buzz, that's because its an electronic sound to make the driver feel/sense the occasion .....yer right! ...................mind you we might al be driving quiet cars in 10 years

Was a gen 1 turbo. I don't believe they did a Gen 1 Turbo S.

The Gen 2 Turbo S used part of the same exhaust system as the GT2 from the Gen 1 to address some of the noise criticisms.

Had my Gen 2 Turbo S from 1700 miles to 29000. Massive increase in noise and growl with pops on the over run and change down - especially noticeable with sport mode on - that was in the car on full tilt it was "LOUD" outside everyone said they sounded like low flying jet fighters.

New 991 is following in the footsteps 3k miles on the clock and tis already popping and pinging on the overrun with a nice growl under acceleration with sport mode.

Despite denials, noticeably louder and growlier (new word) with sport mode on...........

As you know Alan it was very special but it was just a Gen 2 TTS, Freudian slip on Gen 3...............

i have recently got hold of a Miltek sports back box that I intend to put on my gen 2 turbo , I will post a short video in due course.
but what I have been told it is a big difference from but not too loud, just gives it that extra little thump it needs.

You just need to be aware of any potential extended warranty issues when it's fitted. [8|]
