Is it possible to tell wheter a (944T is an SE rather than stock fom the chassis number? If so what are the ranges to look for? Car is an F reg, and has forged SE wheels for starters.

Please dont reply with "look for bigger calipers, boot sticker options, adjustable Konis etc" I'm just interested in whether the chassis number will tell me this.

Many thanks

97 ? Shouldn't that be 95?

In answer to d5hef's question, while you can establish the model year and induction I don't believe you can tell if it is a 220 or 250. Beaky is an 88 model year (E Reg registered December 87) 220.

1988 saw the introduction of the so called "Silver Rose" (though not all were painted metallic light pink thankfully) with the 250 engine. This was sold as a special edition but the 250 engine continued there after. Silver Roses didn't have sun roofs so if you have an 88 turbo without a sun roof odds are it will be a 250.

I don't know when in 88 or 89 they stopped the 220 but assume 89 model year should be the 250.

Mine is a 250 bhp 1988, with no sunroof and was first delivered to it's original owner on 03/08/88...

And it's a nice colour...[:)]

Thought that may help you with which year to buy D5hef...

A 250 bhp you know it makes sense

I'd have to look it up to see the numbers, but the 250bhp engine was a different code from the 220bhp car. I don't know that that is reflected anywhere in the chassis number of a MY'89 car though.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Any Turbo on an F-plate should be a 250 unless it was a late registration earlier car that was hanging around a dealer. Porsche didn't operate like that back then (always make one less car than there are customers being the philosophy back then) so it seems unlikely.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

As Fen suggests above you can tell the 250BHP engines as they are type M44/52, which is stamped on the engine.

The engine number will look something like:-

M44/52
47J00xxx

where 'xxx' is a 3-digit number.

I'm not sure how reliable this is but I believe that you can also tell a 220 from a 250 model by looking at the Inlet Manifold pressure take-off's in between the manifold fingers. A 220bhp car will only have one pressure take-off between each finger but the 250bhp car will have two take-off's in between the two bulkhead end fingers and one in between the others.

Chassis number will have the model year letter as J for 1988 or K for 1989 and L or ZL for 1990. See below:

WPO ZZZ = Europe RoW
WPO AAO = USA/Canada
94 = first two digits of model No. - Standard 944
95 = first two digits of model No. - 951 (944 Turbo)
Z = Europe RoW
O = USA/Canada
D= model year (1983)
E=1984 up to 1990 L (later ZL) 1991 ZM, 1992 ZN
N = Neckarsulm (build plant)
4 = last digit of model No. (944)
1 = last digit of model No. (951)

Interesting,

Andrew perhaps you can help shed light on mine.

WP0ZZZ94ZHN47298 (log book reference) is stamped into the body in the engine bay behind the brake fluid reservoir. The final layer of paint seems to have been masked off around it??

It also has a riveted on plate in the vacuum reservoir section behind the brake fluid reservoir, numbered WPOAB094XHN47298 ??

Its a 1987 n/a 944 chassis no (registered in sept 1988 in USA, its got no sunroof, its definitely a 250 bhp with Mo30 (all spec is as per `Silver Rose` except for upholstery)

Porsche have sketchy details etc for it on their database that included cruise control etc but there is no sign of it being fitted.

Crash damaged? New chassis? All the porsche experts reckon its never been in bits?
