Turbo Side Lights

Ok, I give up! I have removed the outer trim pieces to reveal the four screws holding the unit in (the corner ones, not the adjusters). 3 of them turn but do not come out and one doesn't actually have any slots on the head of any description! Seems to be a screw without the bit for a screwdriver to go in! Aargh![&:]

If I do manage to eventually get the unit off what type of bulb is it?

They are notorious for it mate. You may end up having to drill them out. I managed to get mine out. Wasn't easy and there were some touch and go head stripping moments.
 
My sidelight blew just after the MOT and I could not remove any of my screws (all corroded) I had to snap them all to remove the front unit the remove the rear casing and drill out the brass threaded inserts from the casing as they were all rotten, I then opened up the holes slightly and fitted longer bolts from the rear of the casing glued them in place with epoxy and once set I had four threaded shafts onto which I could fit the front light unit with nuts, so next time I can remove the unit.

Replacement units are very expensive and usually only include the front cover and lens unit whereas I needed the back casing as this is where the brass threaded inserts had rotted.
 
Yes a well known problem but relatively quick to fix if you take the bold approach.

  • Use a largeish drill to remove the screw heads. This will allow you to remove the lights
  • Remove the backing box (3 bolts) and push the wire out of the back
  • Cut off the screws flush with the box
  • Centrepunch and drill out the remains of the screw using the right size drill for an M3 tap
  • Tap a new thread M3
  • Get some new (stainless) M3 bolts (25mm is about right)
  • Put it all back together - As they say 'reverse the instructios above. Note that the most difficult bit is getting the wire grommet back in the hole at the back of the housing
It is a bit of a faf (takes 2 hours a side) but it does save £200 for a new light!

Well after about 2 hours of enthusiastic DIY'ing the finishing line is in sight.[:)]

I turned the 3 screws with heads and they all snapped! No surprise really. The one with no apparent screwdriver deposit on it was seized solid, eventually it snapped but what remained of the screw was stuck fast in the front casing. After much trying to persuade it to come out it shattered into crumbs, oops.[&:] This caused some of the casing to snap off leaving the unit not very waterproof. However with some careful super glueing I got it back together and watertight (hopefully!) but minus the disintegrated lug.

Was able to drill out all the bits of screw from the rear casing and save 3 of the brass fittings (although one lines up with the missing lug, boo!). So basically I have the unit back together with 2 corners held on with the correct screws into the brass fittings and one with a self tapper. The unit seems fairly well solid and sits nicely flush albeit missing one screw.

Managed to get a replacement bulb from the local petrol station for the princely sum of 30p!

Will stick it back on the car tomorrow as bad light stopped play (or indeed started play in the first place!!)[:D]
