Turbo Tie rod kit

Has anyone replaced the standard steering tie rods and tie rod ends with the Turbo tie rod kit which has ball end joints at the rack end?

I did two years ago with a brand new kit from Porsche and having checked them before this years MOT test find that the rubber bellows and the tie rod end rubber dust caps have completely disintegrated because the rubber has age hardened and is no longer flexible causing it to split all over its surface.

The old tie rod parts that came off the car when I fitted the Turbo kit are now 40 years old and are still fully flexible and I am considering putting them back on the car.

Has anyone else suffered the same problem? any thoughts as to what to replace the turbo tie rods and ends as they do sharpen up the steering feel.

Am I the only one who is thinking that many genuine Porsche parts are now of much lower quality that we expect?

Hi Robin , my '69 car had this upgrade done just over 10 years ago , as far as I know everything is still in good order on it , was last on an inspection ramp 2 months ago ..but I'll have a quick look next weekend and post back if there's been any deterioration like you have experienced.

I have just received the new bellows from Porsche centre Hatfield and have fitted them to the rack and am now back on the road, the whole job took about 3 hours to fit them.

Hi Robin,
On quality of parts.... yes I have had a similar problem this year following MOT in April but not on the rack bellows, instead my prob was an INNER drive shaft boot split at the SHAFT end which I had replaced when I overhauled the drive shafts 8 years or 48,000miles ago; bearing in mind that the original was then 32 yrs old!

Incidentally drive shaft boots sold in this country now have a smaller large end which makes it v.diff to install, however I noticed that Pelican Parts in the States has two listed under the same part number but one with a larger end just like the original ones. [;)]

I had a similar problem on my carrera 3.2 a couple of years ago. I bought some supposed OEM equivalent (Lemforder?) bottom ball joints from Eurocar parts to save a few quid over the original porsche items. 9months later the rubber around them had completely split around the joint on both sides. Not such a saving after all
