Turbo Tie Rod mod

Hi there. Spotted this mod in 101 projects. I'd really appreciate any views on whether it is worth doing?

My SC is with JZ Machtech at the minute. While it is there it needs the geometry adjusting and new front tyres. So it seems logical to consider the mod now, knowing it will be done right and that the tyres will wear progressively with the new tie rods in place and the geometry sorted.

Of course I could get the car back and have a go myself if I can summon up the necessary courage (it is my first 911 and I've only had it a few of weeks most of which time it has been with JZ.... which of course is another story).

I have just replaced the tie rods on my 69 911 for the turbo kit. I can't say I noticed an improvement just due to the kit, but this was because I had replaced all the front suspension bushes and installed an anti-roll bar at the same time.

Just the improvement in the design of the turbo tie rods alone makes it worth doing IMHO. Also, there is no point having your geometry set up then installing them yourself later. You will need the wheels re-aligned again after installation.

I'd get them to do it now. It took me about 1.5 hours to do (the old ones can be a pig to get off) and I had never done it before. I'd be surprised if it takes JZ half an hour. Good Luck.

Thanks Guys. That was swift and conclusive.

Provided that costs don't run away on the other work that JZ are doing (clutch, flywheel, heater boxes, various seals) I'll go for it on this outing.

There was just enough left in the piggy back for JZ to do it. Good news! The combination of new front rubber, correct tracking and turbo tie rods has transformed the old girl into a corner hungry monster!

To paraphrase Stephen -the tie rods definitely give an improvement to steering response and it was well worth doing.

Nice one Guys.

Glad to hear you're impressed. When i got the tie rods doen on my 71S it transformed the response of the steering....I think it is a must do mod....certainly for early 911's.

Yeah doing the tie rods realy changes the car. When you setup the tracking did you change the height of the car?

What height did you choose? (what is standard for that matter)
What tracking settings have you now got (toe, camber etc)?

I think they have set mine a bit high.

Cheers
