Turbo Vs GT2

Hi all my first post on this forum!!! I have a dilema ( a nice one ) been a massive fan of the 993 Turbo for years and am now fortunate enough to be in the market. My question is 3 fold so i'm hoping you can help;
1. In 3 years time will the 993 still be 'up to the job' or will it become a weekend classic?
2. Not a huge fan of the 996 looks wise but with the above in mind how do they compare?
3. In contrast like the GT2 look but i'm not foing track days so would i find the GT too much of a handful?

Current car BTW 420BHP RS4 2001

Not sure you will get many responses with that handle.

993 TT looks better than the 996TT much more curvaceous

993Turbo vs 993GT2 you will need to double the amount of money if you want one i.e. £90k. If you mean a 996GT2 theres a good chance that it will become the next classic, its by all accounts a bit of a handfull and not ideal for daily winter use.

The 996 Turbo is an easier car to live with easy to drive past 993Turbo owners who have moved up tend to miss the fun of the 993TT as its more involving. The 993TT prices are slowly rising and the 996 is slowly depreciating see below

The 993TT is perfectly usuable on a daily basis though cold wet wintry days you need to warm the tyres up before booting the turbo's

Hello Mr. Muff - your handle did raise a chuckle however I must agree with Gordon.

Basically as above: the cars are of similar (colossal) abilities though you'd be sweating less in the 996. (and possibly smiling less).

I notice you have a modified RS4 - well these 2 TT beasts are also very tunable, take a look on pistonheads and rennlist as a lot of guys doing it on there.

The 993tt will still be up there with the best in 3 years IMO - but even the newest ones will be 12-13 years old by then.

Salutations, Muffman.
Going from an RS4 to a 996turbo would be a smooth step, because they are both biggish cars. If you want true Porsche essence, you go for the 993. It shrinks around you and gets you involved. If you wish to just conduct a car, take the 996. If you wish to really "drive" a car, take the 993. In my opinion it was the last true classic built by Porsche, and I mean "built".It is pretty near bombproof.
Better stop now. Can't be getting too excitable at my age.

Hi
Much as I respect the earlier cars, don't be put off the 996tt by these enthusiastic but biased 993tt owners. A 996tt varies in its "driveability" according to specification. If you want a modern civilised usable supercar, take it as standard. For loads of involvement get an X50 with aerokit and sports suspension and leave the 993 boys for dead. The 996GT2 is brilliant in the right road conditions, but may prove a bit of a handleful when pressing on in the wet on unfamiliar roads. It all depends on what you want the car to do for you. Mine is an X50 etc and I use it as my main car and it is brilliant.
My friend has just got a 997tt and that is even better. After 18 years with them they improve with every model. Long may Porsche rule.[:D]

he he good to get a healthy 993/996 balance for the poor chap.

Rintoul I'm sorry but I couldn't resist: '.....get an X50 with aerokit and sports suspension and leave the 993 boys for dead.' ??

well perhaps unless the 993 is X50 with PSS9's [;)]

Spot on! [;)]

996 GT2 everytime. You'll find it a hugely satisfying drive, and don't believe all the hype; get the suspension geometry set up correctly, keep an eye on tyre pressures, treat it with respect and you'll have enormous fun :p

If we are moving onto the track, then it opens up more competent Porsche models than either. I take it you are either a driving god or these 996X50 (with a decent suspension set up) owners are just city boy poseurs? Got to be a GT2/3 for track work and 4 wheel drive for all year road use. There has been many a useful boxster owner embarras the "Supercar" brigade (both onroad and track).
I can vouch for ensuring correct 4 wheel geometry suspension set up on any 911. Past experience on more than one occasion, has been making me look to change tyres because I thought the new car didn't handle as well as the old. (This is despite the 111 point and geometry check). When checking my local OPC said they were hardly out but the print out showed a little bit here and there. But what a transformation. Going from skittish, nervous oversteer to being planted. £120/£150?? well spent.
Now I better get off and get the bit most needing a tune up to go faster (me), just incase I come across a 993tt who knows I've opened my big mouth.

Biggermuff i bought a 996 GT2 about 3 months ago and i can defenatley recommend the car, if u want pure adrenline and excitement then this is the car far you, but what i would say its not a good everyday car and extreme caution needed in winter on wet and slippery roads, so if u want an everyday car go far a 996tt but if u want that extra something go far the 996 GT2

Thanks for that info, would you say it is easy to drive fast on cold try tarmac? Did you look at 996tt before etc

Biggermuf i was all set up to buy a black 996 tt with triptronic and all the creature comforts. Now baring inmind it was my dream car since i went to the motor show back in the 80s as a 10 year old boy i was very slightly dissapointed, maybe my expectations was a bit much or maybe the 996 TT is just such a good car it seemed so in control and not so much off an animal what i thought the 996TT would be. Even the noise from the engine and exhaust seemed very quiet far a car with such a reputation then my cousin told me about a GT2 the car is just so different than the 996TT the noise, looks and performance just seemed more raw and more like the original porsche turbo i had seen has a boy, so i chose the GT2 far me since i only drive the car probably once a week and yes its great on dry cold tarmac just avoid wet days.

If you are worried about wet weather use and want Gt2 performance get an X50tt with sports suspension because it is then basically the same engine and suspension set up, but with security of 4 wheel drive and PSM. You could fit GT2 body work or a tt aerokit to suit your taste. After market exhausts will give you the growl you are looking for. Either car will thrill you. Neither is docile. Good hunting. Let us know what you get.[:)]
