Turbo wastegate

I need the 6" pipe that connects the wastegate to the exhaust down pipe (as per previous post) ,i have found one but while discussing it realised that my old one probably wont come off my old wastegate as its very rusty around the bolts and the gate is made of cast + the guy selling the replacement is reluctant to take it off his wastegate incase the bolts shear off in the cast metal so he has given me a price for the gate complete with the small pipe and the pipe that goes to the turbo. What i need to know before buying it are all the gates and pipe the same on all turbo's .Mine is the 220 the new gate is off a 250 but thats not 100% definate as he cant quite remember which car it came off. If they are different how do you tell them apart ???

They are the same, as far as I am aware.

Be cautious as wastegates aren't cheap and are of value as they can be converted to Lindsey Racing Dual Port Wastegates. That said, you could then sell your old one.

I have my old wastegate sitting in a box with a number of broken studs in the flanges. One day I might get around to drilling the studs out and rethreading the holes. But then again perhaps I won't. [8|]

A 250T wastegate has more cooling fins on the cast body than a 220T car, but they are totally interchangeable.

Thanks for that, i just thought i better check before buying it. Buying the complete unit seems to make sence as the studs are bound to snap if i try and remove them. I've been offered the full lot for a good price so hopefully it should go on ok. Will the pipe at the turbo end be the same size as arnt the 250 turbo units bigger ??

No, they're the same. All the exhaust pipework is fully interchangeable and the same size. You should also get away with using the same crush-ring gasket even though in theory you should replace them, but i'm told it's common practice to re-use.

Cheers scott, i think i will change the crush ring while im on just to be on the safe side. How much of a job is it to change the wastegate ??

Replacing the wastegate is easy in theory - it's just a straight unbolt/bolt-on job but as you have sussed out there is every likelihood of the bolts shearing off. It is repairable but i'm not sure how as I did an exchange with mine for a stock wastegate converted to a dual port wastegate. However just reading your starting note again two things have just sprung to mind. One is there are two types of exhaust manifold and downpipe assy on turbos - one is a 4-2-1 and the other is a 4-1 so i'm not sure if the pipework you are looking at is downstream of that or not. It's worth checking out beforehand. Also check that the cast body of the wastegate is not cracked along the valley between the cooling fins.

The new wastegate looked fine to me,i will be getting the gate with the 6" pipe that attaches to the down pipe and the pipe that comes out of the other end of the gate which i presume goes to the turbo ??

My down pipe is 4-2-1 ,the little pipe that i need bolts to the exhaust just after the down pipe link(on the centre section) so hopefully it should all be the same .
