Hi anyone had there Turbo rebuilt and if so any comments? Mine is a little bit sick [:(]
Tony

How many miles has your car done? I understood that a Turbo generally wouldn' t need a rebuild until about 150,000 miles or so. Could be completely wrong, mind you!
I know that AMD in Oxfordshire will rebuild them and they may even sell you a reconditioned one, on an exchange basis.

My car has done just under 130,000 miles, the turbo has been a bit noisy ever since i got it at 90,000. I think the cold side sucked in some dirt at some stage and damaged a vane and it has slowly been getting worse, also running out of balance has damaged the bearings. It is not in a terrible state and probably would have kept going, but luckily?! an intake hose split, tracing the hose I discovered the turbo damage. We did a survey on the titanic forum a while back and whilst many 944 turbos lasted a lot longer than 150,000 miles some only made it to 100,000 I will try and find the details if you are interested.

Yes, I would be interested in your progress in this particular matter! My car is coming up for 110,000 miles and, touch wood, everything seems to be OK so far.
I' m getting one or two wee jobs attended to on friday of this week, so might ask the mechanic to cast an eye over the turbo at the same time.
All the best!

Oh crikey, having just spent a small fortune on her it sounds like another big bill is looming. I have 126,000 miles on my Turbo. It was inspected recently and given a clean bill of health. But out of interest and in preparation, how much is a new or reconditioned Turbo?

This is the results of the titanic turbo life survey - 5 failures out of 32 replies,
(Thanks to David Sims for collecting the results)

There were 32 responses

25 turbos were original:
Average 111,000 miles Max 184,000 Min 55,000

2 tubos had been upgraded (and were in good order)
82,000 and 75,0000 miles

5 turbos had been replaced
Average 115,000 miles Max 165,000 Min 70,000

Thanks to all that contributed,

I decided on ITS in Leeds after a reccommendation from a titanic lister universal turbos in ringwood were likely to be more expensive.

On my turbo, reconditioning the standard one was £475 or upgrading to K27 intake £625, for both versions this is new internals and new intake side housing etc.

The 250BHP car already has the largest K26 size so you can' t go any bigger without going up to K27. I think the hybrid also has uprated bearings etc.

The K27 requires mods to the intake boot (due to the larger intake diameter) and the coolant pipe to clear the inlet manifold.

It is all taking longer than anticipated, but should be all back together next week.

Oh forgot to add, I took the Turbo out myself and then spent a lot of time cleaning all the pipes and the intercooler out. So if you were getting someone else to do it there would be a fair bit of labour involved. I also replaced the dump valve with a piston type as I couldn' t see a good way to get the bits out of the old one (plus there all shiny[;)]). I decided to leave the head on, I had a good look past the intake valves and down the spark plug holes it was very clean in there - don' t know if it' s down to all the optimax that been through or not, I expect the exhaust valves are dirtier though.

I had mine replaced last year when the car was with Bob Watson. It had 149k on it at the time and we did it just because it seemed like a good idea. The original turbo appeared perfect though. Cost was around £400 IIRC, but I don' t know who did it for him.

We've probbaly all seen it , I had an e-mail the minute it went on e bay :p

However we all know that proper car dealers dont give cars away. No MOT , sills rotten ?? fuel pipes gone , clutch wobbly who knows ? add them all up and it may be a scrapper. If its half genuine , I'd gladly view it and let you know as its not too far from me ( for a change). I can just about see the interior is scruffy so probably that's the first thing. My hunch is it's a scrap car but I may be totally wrong , I'm going by the price and the fact that any dealer who could cheeply MOT t would do so and put it up for 3500 take 3. I bought the one in my avatar for 1700 , it had no rot , needed no paint and still needed 2,000 to 2500 to make a decent job of it.

That turbo is fucked. I was expecting to see some little chips. Will be well off blance and spin high rpm that they do I would replace. Or get re built. Check the intercooler see if there any bits in there.

I'm going to be removing mine shortly. 26/8 There's no blade damage, no play, no leaks off oil out side. Just the seal on the hot side so it put oil though the exhaust, if your going for a rebuild seal kit may be worth a shot.

Hi
