Turboless

Hi All,

I am turboless for two weeks as I had a small oil leak which turned out to be from the head gasket and cam carrier gasket bottom and left side of the engineer and they have to take the engine out so no car for a couple of weeks while it's fixed.

Already looking forward to getting it back

A couple of weeks for a gasket?
If it's a small leak, can't you drive it while you wait for a slot in the service schedule, then just be without it for a day or two?

It needs to have the engine out to fix it so it's about 35 hours work as a minimum so they wanted it for at least 7 - 10 days.

Got my car back today seems ok maybe even slightly quicker but that might be perception as I hadn't driven for nearly two weeks all done under warranty. The Porsche extended warranty is worth every penny as 35hours labour would have been an expensive bill.

Sadly it has to go back to the car hospital as after 65miles the V-Belt squeels at idle and there is a disconcerting noise on every bump and uneven road I guess the engine mounts are loose and it stalls even more easily. Having had the car for nearly 3 months it will have spent at least 3 weeks in the garage so that makes it the most unreliable car I have ever owned and the most expensive. It knocks your confidence in the car itself for all it's positives there is that nagging feeling I sold my C2 to avoid RMS and have ended up with more issues!!

Sorry to hear the news Uppy, but glad to see Porsche OPC doing there best in service again[:'(]

I've still washed it today but they are coming to pick it up on Tuesday and bringing me a courtesy car. Luckily I don't rely on the 911 as my day to day transport but it's still a pain.

The OPC were very helpful this morning but fixing it would be better..[:)]

Tempted to get a 987 and take some cash back

Strange, I had the same thought a while back, but I know I would miss the shove in my back everytime I leave at set of traffic lights....[:D]
I have read how good the 987 is and I'm tempted, will wait to see the 997TT first and then decide.

If it's all fixed properly when it comes back again then I'd probably keep it but if it needs more work between service's then I'll properly chop it for something else and tick the 911 Turbo box and move on to something else.

The Boxster S was my first Porsche and one I had kept the longest and I think the new one is a great evolution of that model and it looks better than ever.

But it won't give that incredible shove in the back the Turbo does and the fact that even cars like the new M6, RS4 are still slower to 60 and in most cases 0 - 100 than the 911 TT.

Got my car back on Friday but there was some strange noises, slipping v-belt and another oil leak so they picked the car back up on Tuesday and lent me a Corsa. The car was returned today minus the oil leak and squealling v-belt and I was told all was fine. Drove the car and there was a squeak from the rear left so I drove the car to the OPC and took a technician out. To cut a long story short they have but the engine back in in such away that it has caught some pipes off the turbos and now they are rubbing, I was told it's 50/50 getting it right when refitting I read that as we didn't know how to put it back so we did what we thought was best. So the engine and gearbox have to come out again to fix the fact it wasn't put back right. Still I have a Saab now and not a Corsa hopefully it will be third time lucky.

Although you have not mentioned it, I presume you have a 996 Turbo.
Having heard and read so much about 996 troubles it would seem that the( commonly held) view that this was the first "Accountants" car built by Porsche may be true.
My understanding is that about 80 percent of the car was "bought-in", the exact opposite of the 993 and other previous 911 models.
I now intend to cosset my beauty to the end, and have it buried with me.

993 turbo

Indeed I have a 2003 996 Turbo I guess I may have been unlucky as had the garage put the engine back in correctly it wouldn't be so troublesome but that is no excuse for the oil leaks that started this all off. I am not sure how much of the car is out-sourced.

Uppy,

Sorry to hear this catalogue of woe - but the 996TT seems to have a better reliability and build quality record than the lesser models.

Sounds more like you've an incompetent dealer, or because it's a warranty job, they've not put their best man on the case?

Something like this does put you off - but after a great day at Castle Combe yesterday, I'm even more addicted to the 996TT! Don't lose faith....

Thanks for all the advice and comments while I have frequented the 911 Turbo Register Forum. I decided to quit the hassle and take a 987 S. I have enjoyed my brief TT ownership of what is an amazingly quick car so quick I can't see how you can have it with no points. Luckily I managed not to get any and am glad to have experienced a Turbo but I am looking forward to getting a new born Boxster S.

Thanks to all.
