TWEETERS AND WOOFERS ?

My 1987 SuperSport has 4 speakers 1 in each door 2 in the rear parcel shelf , i have noticed some 3.2 Carreras have seperate woofers and tweeters in the front doors .. was this a later option on the 3.2,s or did they just change the way they supplied the system on the later models......

Optional Hi-Fi pack - amplifier under driver's seat and separate high, low/mid frequency speakers in doors. Not sure if the rear parcel shelf speakers were also different in spec.

Option code M490.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.. If other cars are like mine, the amplifier adds little but extra weight to the car and the tweeters are cheap and nasty. One of mine doesn't work, and it drives me mad. There is frequency splitting circuitry in the doors to send a lower fq to the main door speakers and a higher fq to the tweeters. These are also pretty rubbish. It's on my list of things to sort out.
If anyone knows of a modern replacement tweeter I can use, please shout!

I replaced mine with period but new speakers all round - my car is a cab and suffers from the lack of rear parcel shelf mounting options. I used new (1980's - still boxed and sealed) JBLs in the rear side panels, Pioneers new the same in the doors. I have the seperate speakers tweeter and woofer but removed the old tweeters and carefully cut the old tweeter basket, then modified the new one with some help from a strong two part based glue, fixed the new tweeter in the old basket, allowed to go off, and then remounted using original tweeter grill - same with the Woofers only they came with identical to factory standard grills (apart from a non visible Pioneer logo that is down inside the door tray) - and I have new clear sound that looks all original.
Shop around and check before you buy that you can modify both the old and new speaker baskets to be able to re-use the grills, unless you can get matching grills, but the max power generation of speaker styles that are out there are not my bag.
My old original speakers were torn to shreds, but I guess thats from years of over use with the hood down.
Good luck with it

I have also replaced the speakers all-round.

Genesis units in the doors and JL in the rear shelf. The Genesis tweeters were a really nice close fit in the factory tweeter housings. All vastly better than the standard bits but I very infrequently use it - only usually on the boring (m/way, etc) bits of a drive. Love the sound of the engine too much....

THANKS EVERYONE ..... THINK I,LL JUST UPGRADE WHAT IS THERE ALREADY BUT I THINK I WILL FIND IT HARD TO GET SPEAKERS THAT DONT LOOK THEY SHOULD BE FITTED IN A SPACE SHIP AS THEY ALL DO IN HALFORDS AND SOME I,C,E SHOPS

My car has the hi-fi option nut the amp had been removed by a previous owner at some point. While replacing the rotten door cards with a new southbound set made for an SC (i.e. one speaker hole in each) I noticed that the tweeters werent even wired. I binned them. I also replaced the parcel shelf and door speakers with similar sized speakers bought from Halfords and the origianl speaker covers fit fine with them (I also dont like the Star Trek look) so it is possible to upgrade and retain the standard appearance. You can even buy the orignal speaker covers and the plastic frame that they fix to from an OPC if they are looking a little tired.

I recently did a speaker upgrade using the orginal door speaker apertures. I found some new speakers made by a company called 'Fly' which fitted straight in, even to the point off using the existing screw holes. Cost of the speakers were about £40 for 2 Woofers, 2 tweeters together with crossovers and all the fittings. I was also able to retain the orginal grills. The sound is better but still not as good as I believe it should be.

Who needs tweeters and woofers anyway - the best soundtrack comes from that lump of iron under the parcel shelf!
