two piece floating brake discs - worth the investment?

Hi all,

First post - thanks for having me on the forum :) I promise I'll post on the welcome thread as soon as I can sort out a couple of good recent photos.

I was wondering if I could pick 997 owners' brains about brake discs. I have been considering upgrading the discs on my Carrera S to two piece floating discs of the same size (hoping for a direct replacement). The main goal would be to save unsprung weight with a view to also replacing the wheels in the longer term. Carbon ceramics are not an option :)

However the price difference between OEM and two-piece is significant looking at design911 (about 4x for brembo and similar for giro discs; EPC might have alternatives too) and it's being difficult to find specs that will allow me to compare the different options including against the OEM discs. In particular weights.

Does anyone have any experience with two piece discs on a Carrera S/4S/turbo (if it doesn't have them from factory)? Ideally has anyone done this in their car and how noticeable was the difference? Does anyone know what's the weight of the standard OEM discs when new?

Welcome!

I fear the weight difference will not be noticeable (unless you are a track God) unless you go ceramic (even then it's not night and day) so I'd go SICOM in Germany which make much cheaper and better quality CCBs than Porsche's offering.
 
Agree wholeheartedly with Rodney, the cost/benefit of the mod you are proposing just doesn't stack up. However, if you're looking to improve brake performance, there are a number of alternatives open to you without going as far as CCB's.
Okellyt on this forum did a lot of research and has practical knowledge of C2S brake mods.

He may be along soon to provide his advice, otherwise PM him. I'm sure he would be happy to help!

Thanks all, I'm definitely not a track god :p My plan was to achieve an incremental improvement, but nothing drastic since the car is firmly a road/street car. I'll await Okellyt's advice or PM him/her shortly.

EDITed to add: I should confess that I've asked the same question on the 911uk.com forum and got a consistent response. Someone there weighed the OEM discs again Giro 2 piece ones and the total weight savings (2 fronts + 2 rears) were 2.2Kg total. That isn't worth 4x the investment. Swapping wheels however is another story and that's also in my plans going forward.
