So it was MOT day today but it didn't go according to plan. I checked all the lights only to find I had no main beam  which fortunately I traced back to a loose fuse on the hid's. However the problems did not end there upon collection I was informed it failed on emissions CO was 4.03% (fail max 3.5%) HC was fine at 148ppm.

I had noticed my afr reading had dropped over the last couple of weeks to around 12 and I will have a poke around this weekend, check and clean the plugs etc and the wideband sensor, what other suspects should I look at ?

It is certainly a worry. I appreciate we shouldn't contaminate the planet but there seems to be a push to rid the world of old cars with no thought of having to contaminate the planet in building a replacement. Sorry, Ill get off my soap box.

Have you checked the air filter, and make sure the engine is good and toasty before you arrive at the test centre with the aircon off. Otherwise all of the above and cross your fingers.

A quick service should sort that out, new oil, filter, air filter etc...You can always run some cleaner in the fuel system if it doesn't improve. With the hydrocarbons being ok, there's nothing wrong with the engine per se, just needs a good service..

Main beam isn't tested - no reason for refusal. Headlamps not fitted at all isn't either. You will simply receive an advisory.
