Hi, I have just found a gash on my n/s/r tyre which will need replacing. What I would like to know is if I can go ahead and change it without worrying about anything else. I used to have a 4x4 Cavalier many years ago on which I had to change 1 tyre. I did so but after 2 months I had damaged my 4x4 transfer box. Vauxhall said because the new tyre had 8mm tread and my other tyres had 3mm the geometry was out therefore damaging the transfer box. They said the depths have to all be the same on all 4 tyres else damage will occur. Do I have to worry about the same problem on a C4s or is it ok to have different depths as long as the brands are the same?

So if i have 8mm on the n/s/r, 4mm on the o/s/r, 6mm on the o/s/f and 6mm on the n/s/f will I cause any damage?
I recently had a 111 check with 6mm on the front and 4mm on the rear and the OPC didnt mention that the wear rates may be a problem! Or is it only a problem on the same axle?
What are the tolerance levels of the tread depths?

only a problem on the same axle. fronts tend to last longer than rears (i'm already on to my second set of rears 7,500 miles on but the fronts have plenty of tread left).
are those hypothetical numbers or do you really have that much difference between the rears? and are the readings consistent for each wheel across the outer edge, middle and inside edge? if not, when you get your tyre(s) changed, get the alignment checked - that could be off too.
Tyre depths wouldn't necessarily* come up as an issue with a 111-point as tyres are not covered by the warranty.

* I say 'necessarily' as brake discs aren't covered either and some forum users elsewhere have mentioned that OPCs bring up hairline cracks forming from the vent holes in the discs as a reason for not passing the 111-point check!

Not just cracks - even excessive corrosion is a reason for failure. A nice little earner though, eh? []
