Tyre Choice for my turbo

Hi

My rears are shot in less than 5k miles, ouch.

Currently on Pirelli pzero rossos all round. Thinking of trying something else as only ever had pirellis on my Porsches. What's the consensus, Michelin PS2s?? Or Bridgestone Potenzas?

Thinking do the rear in some different rubber and follow suit on the front when they need replacing - no big issues doing that right??

TIA

Michelin last the longest comparing like with like driving style and correct wheel alignment. I've always used Continental Sport Contact 2s which on the turbo seem to be holding up well. On the Carrera the rears lasted 5k miles to 1.6mm. On the turbo I've done 9k miles to 3 mm. Try Blackcircles and Camskill for a good price if you know someone who can fit them for you. Tyres are a subjective business so do search on this forum an you will see lots of discussion about them. Richard the forum moderator was happy with Yokohama V103, although they were not N rated for 996s. They are for 997s.

Ive heard stories that with the turbo /4/4s, due to the 4 wheel driveness of the car all 4 tyres should be the same. Im sure richard will know if it makes a difference or not tho.

I don't like mixing tyres front to rear, but I don't think there is a legal reason why it can't be done. Porsche say to use the same N rated tyre all round, but as has been said, I went away from N rated on my Turbo. The winter tyres on my Cayman aren't N rated either.

Chris, what you may be thinking about is the effect tyre size can have on PSM. This is more affected by having a worn tyre on one side, and a new one on the other.

On the subject of Contis, I wore out two sets of rears in 8000 miles (4000 each). Min experienced fast wear rate on his C2, and I have heard the same elsewhere. Personally, I think there was a period (or batch) when they changed the compound, because now it doesn't seem to be an issue with them. I know that it isn't supposed to happen, but I can't think of another explanation.

For currently ( supposedly ) available tyres Michelins do have about the best wear rates but following a set of them on my Cayman I had a set of Bridgestones fitted and for mileage they are doing better than both Conti's on this car and Pirellis on my Boxster S in fact the Bridgestones feel just as good as the Michelins and the rim protector on the side wall is much better than most other tyres. Not that I tend to kerb my wheels but it's good to know that it does what it's there for, the same feature on the Conti's I found ineffective.

Jon,

I've got Contis N2 on my C4S & only down to +5mm after 8k miles.... I know, don't drive it hard enough[;)] but they're said to be quieter than other brands....

Event tyres, come to you & no probs with alloys

Hello Paul,

Had the Conti's on my Aston, was quieter in that Cabin but they are a heavier car also. No issues with handling, think i got 6k out of the rears. Do i have too heavy a right foot?? The fact that one of my favourite 996 features over the Aston is that traction control can be switched off immediatey instead of pressing and holding for 4 secs may also have something to do with it!!

The Michelin PS2s I've yet to have On recent cars so i think i may try them out and see what i think.

Im not overly concerned about matching the fronts up rightaway as its not the time of year to push hard. If i feel a problem then ill switch straightaway to match all 4.

Cheers for the advice guys - Let you know how it goes

Bridgestones on mine, happy with handling and wear rate, I couldn't get hold of the 295 michelins at the time

Right - Just ordered 2 Michelin PS2's from a friend of mine for £190.00! 7mm left on each left, they were taken in at my mates tyre place when a customer upgraded his wheels & tyres.I think new PS2s come with about 8mm of tread and cost £350 each so I'm pretty chuffed!!

Seems to read across to Boxster S & Cayman S so given they're also RWD brandwise they should be similar.

Mixing tyre brands front to rear ? could prove thet the psm works ! let us know.

Good choice, and sounds like that was a good deal you got. I've been running PS2 since I had mine 6 years ago. I got 16,000 out of the rears and 24,000 from the fronts - that's for a C2 btw.
