tyre choice

Well having purchased the car in the dark I've had her serviced and all very good. Both mechanics said it was a ' very clean car ' so looks like the gamble paid off.
I need to replace the rear tyres to get her through the MOT. The wheels are the white cookie cutters (i think thats what they are called) and have some Fulda y-2000 on at the moment. The size is 215/60 ZR15. There doesn't seem to be a huge selection of tyres in this size so any recommendations would be most helpful.

I had Toyo T1R S on my Turbo and they were really good.

www.camskill.com have some great deals on these at the mo.

Falken FK452 are a popular choice and I have recently bought some
Vredestein Sessanta for my car, several Turbo owners here have used them
and gave them the thumbs up.

Got a set of Yokohama AVS sport on the 968 at the moment in OEM sizes 205 front 225 rear. Really impressed with how these tyres ride and handle, grip decent but the steering and the way car tracks through corners is really really nice.

Just got a set of Bridgestone N rated tyres and they are FANTASTIC.. I did have very old Michellin tyres on prior to this, but these Bridgestones have a truely fantastic grip

I have the Falken 452's on my S2 and Ive been very happy with them, loads of grip and very progressive when they do let go. Wont quite give the grip of the £120 a tyre Bridgestones (or similar) but at about half the price they are just great VFM IMO.

That just about says it all! I had no idea what was popular and was about to add these two options to the thread but it seems everyone is saying the same

Toyo T1 R's are the best tyre I've ever had in the dry on a hot day, braking with non ABS brakes really showed the difference in grip as you could stand on the pedal twice as hard without locking up than with the Goodyear's I replaced.

Falkens are superb in the wet (or they were when I last had them) Toyo's are good and thats my overall choice nowadays but Falkens seem to have an extra edge in the wet that you don't get with anything else. It feels more like driving in the dry, you don't get that gliding slide feeling when you reach the traction limit. It just feels normal.

One tyre I've never bought (because they are so expensive) but came on a car I owned and were fantastic are the Mitchelin (cup 3's or something). You'll know the one when you see them because they are about £40 per tyre more than all the other brands. Worth a mention because they are hard wearing as well as grippy but you need to be seriously dedicated to buy 4 of those for your car! About £240per rear and £200per front I think.

I don't think there is a need to go N rated is there, after all the rating came in long after the car was built.

I think you are right about the N rating and older cars, I think this was a rating to indicate Porsche recommendation of the tyre to car.

I put Toyo T1Rs all round on my S2 255/40/17 rear 225/45/17 fronts £330 about two years ago and they are brilliant wet and dry but especially in the hot dry weather and wearing very well with 10K miles on mine they still look like new but I don't drive them too hard.

I've used Khumo Ecstar 225x45x17 front 225x40x17 rear on my S2 and and they perform very well. Long lasting and good grip in the wet but to be fair I never push the car anymore
Previous tyres were Michelin Pilot Spt
Rears are due for changing soon . I'm not sure that 40 is the correct profile ?

just had a quote from a local tyre company for the two rear tyres on my S2 which are 255-40-17 on Cups and they quoted £87.00 each fitted incl Vat.
The tyres are the latest KU31 pattern so thats a stonkin bargain.
Mill Auto Services are based at Taunton just down the road from me but they mail order tyres and advertise on Ebay.

The place is run by women and to see them work is a delight . To say they are better than the blokes is an understatement.[]

what size tyres are you looking for ? Falkens are certainly cheap at £54.00 but for the same price you should be able to get Khumo Ecstar Spt 712 which are a much better tyre and tread.
