Tyre Choices (again)...

OllieW

New member
Rear tyres are getting a little close to the bone so am on the hunt for a new set all round as the fronts won't last much longer either...

Article in GT PP has highlighted a few alternatives to the regular MPSC's and I want to know if anyone has any experience of the other options.

I am considering fitting:

Yokahama A048's
Toyo R888's

I know alot of you run with the Cup's but I fancy trying something else.

Cheers

Ollie

have yet to try them yet but i have just bought Dunlop DZ02G's they come highly rated, another choice would be dunlops SSR . Both are track day tyres rather than general use although SSR is less extreme and is better in the wet. DZ's £630ish for set of 4 SSR's shade under £500

I use the Dunlop DZ02G's on mine. They're a road legal track tyre which give excellent grip in the dry but, as I discovered yesterday at Donington, are pretty average in the wet. They just didn't inspire me with enough confidence to take the car through the corners at any speed and even when the track was beginning to dry out, I got the car sideways a couple of times. I've used them pretty aggresively on four track days now and they're getting pretty close to the legal limit (worse on the inside shoulders as I run about 2 1/2 degrees negative camber on the front and about 2 degrees on the rear). They're probably still OK for a couple more track days, but getting the car to the track won't be so easy. I've even started thinking about getting a trailer.[&:]
A possible solution is to use the original mag wheels for the track tyres (as they're lighter) and get a set of spare wheels for the road and wet use tyres. But I still need a way of getting both sets to the track.[]

Can anyone confirm what wheel sizes I need? Are they 7.5x17 front and 9x17 rear, offset 55? Is this offset the same as the ET number?

Hi Ollie - open to suggestions but I quite fancy trying the SSRs? Good feedback, not too extreme and well priced. Not exactly the right sizes but I am told they are close enough to work well and people have given good feedback.

Tim - you are right re sizes, 7.5 + 9 x 17 with offset ET 55 is the original fitment. Not at all easy to find used though. Mags are very expensive. Most original Porsche wheels are 7 + 9 x 17 (not 7.5) but they seem to work fine. Mile Miglia do 7.5 + 9 x 17 with offset ET 47 and 52 which work fine but are a bit heavier than Porsche wheels. I think a second set is the answer, take a look here:

I have Cups on the RS and SSRs on the CS. They handled very well round Spa last week and not a lot to choose between them. On the road SSR for the wet as they have deeper grooves and diserse the water better.

I had the CS at Papenburg

In the simulated wet conditions I could only unstick the back on the polshed granite braking(ice). On the wet asphalt they just understeered all day long. On the RS this would not have been a problem!

I'm currently running SSR's and they seem to suit my driving and ability in the car very well, nice and progressive rather than snappy.

In all honesty I think I will go for another set as a few of you are also using them with favourable results, I'd be interested in trying the Yoko's or Toyo's at some point though...

I'll email Mr Tyre in Birmingham and see if they will put a SSR group buy together for RS sizes if anyone is interested.

Cheers

I have followed previous advice and now have a set of SSR's on some spare rims. I am very satisfied with their performance, cost and wear etc. One word of caution concerns road use where the soft compound attracts a significant amount of debris such as screws and nails which become embedded in the tread to an alarming degree.I would advise that they be reserved for track use only.
This leads me to the real reason for my posting, namely road tyres. I recently sought help from the forum re replacements for P Zero Rosso's and went for the highly recommended S O 2's.To say that I am disappointed is an understatement. Compared with the Pirelli.I find them imprecise and 'greasy', with low grip on road and on an admittedly wet Donington track last Monday.I have messed with pressures to no avail.Where have I gone wrong? After 500 miles I am looking to sell them on for a sensible offer and go back to Pirelli.
Call 07973 600941 if you fancy a deal. I would arrange delivery etc.
Incidentally I have ensured that mine are NOT the Taiwanese version that I have been hearing about.

must admit i'm suprised. I had a drive of dessie's car shod with S02's at Brands and thought they were much better than my (admittedly worn) pirelli directionale/assimetrico combination. Perhaps the rosso's are an improvement over the directionale but i thought the so2's were heaps better.

Ollie,
Not sure my current SSRs will last much beyond two days at Spa next week, so I would be interested in a group buy. I believe there are no more 215 fronts left, so people have been using the 225 instead along with the 245 on the rear. So a bit wide at the front and narrow at the rear - should sort any understeer problems out !

NB Camskills have the 245 on offer at £95 !!!!

Thanks for confirming the wheel sizes. Finding anything in exactly the right size seems very difficult. Does an ET47 offset on the fronts really work? Does this mean the wheels will sit 8mm further out or further in? Has anyone actually fitted 17", 7.5" ET47 front and 9" ET52 rear and can confirm the handling is still OK?

Hi

Right size is difficult to find but the MM wheels work fine - a few of the guys here have a set (Simon, Mel, Matt etc) and have had no problems. I actually had the offsets the wrong way around in my initial post, fronts are ET52 and rears are ET47.

They went out of production a little while back and I don't think anyone has new sets still in stock but they do come up used from time to time.

Regards

HI tim

I have a set of cup style wheels with ET47-52 (17) and i cant notice any difference on trackday use from correct mag wheels. There are no clearence issues on mine fitted with 225 front and 255 rears. You should be able to get a set for about £400.

cheers

Thanks for the info. Design 911 and Mile Miglia are about £500. Do you know who has them at £400?
