Tyre choices?!

Hi, looking at new tyres. currently running Michelin Pilot Sport on 19" rims, done a few track days and so these are wearing slightly so looking into new tyre options.

The Michelin's are good but heard varying reports of them wearing quicker than others. I have read reports that the Continental Sport Contact 5 are very good with an improved SC 6 out now too but not too sure if these are 'N' rated?

Do the tyres need to be N rated? I know that is Porsches recommendation but I am wondering on the view of others with this as the Continentals are much cheaper than the Michelins and get better reviews.

Cheers,

Nick

Do you have a porsche warranty? If yes, and you plan to renew, you will need to have N-rated tyres when you renew. Ideally, your N-ratings will match too. i.e. N-1 all round or N-0 all round. mixing N-x is frowned upon.

Thanks, not under any warranty so guess I can choose whatever tyres and yes, agree with the N rating, same goes for the type of tyre, should all be the same really but do the tyres really need to be N rated? Does anyone else run the Continentals too?

Hi Nick,

This is a fairly well-worn path on this forum so you should do a search.

To summarise:- you can fit whichever tyres you wish unless you want to maintain a Porsche Approved Extended Warranty, in which case you must fit N rated tyres all from the same manufacturer and all with the same N rating so mixing N1 with N2 for example would not pass the 111 point inspection.

Many rate Michelin Super Sport very highly indeed for both performance and longevity, but I don't believe they are N rated for 19", but worth checking. Many enthusiasts here chose Bridgestone as the optimum tyre. N rated Contis should be fine too but not quite so popular on the 997.

However, if you're main criteria for choosing tyres is based on cost, then I'm afraid you're probably driving the wrong sort of car! [:D]

I run Bridgestones on my 997.2 turbo and they are very good in the dry. I have not driven it much in the wet so can't comment on that. I do have warranry so am bound to pick N-rated tyres when i replace them. The fronts are nearly 5 years old so should be changed anyway. I'll likely go with the same again so they match the rears.

Thanks for the replies, I did do a quick search but didn't see a topic straight away that was relevant.

The cost is not the issue, the point is that they are cheaper than the Michelins and get better reviews overall, however this is not necessarily reviewed on a Porsche 997.

Anyway, the point of the topic is the tyre choice of people running similar cars. Good to hear that the Michelins get good reviews, I am leaning more towards these as the Conti's are not N rated. Also interesting that people are using the Bridgestones too...

Decisions decisions...

I think different tyres were favoured at different times on different models. Seems that most of not all 997.2 turbos came with Bridgestones - at least in 2010/2011.

As JCX I run also on Bridgestones and find them good in wet conditions also. I rate them highly all round.

Yes that's what i have - Potenza RE050A. There is some noise, they are a harder than the Michelins i think and a longer lasting tyre so some noise is to be expected i suppose. The noise doesn't come close to drowning out the engine sound :) nor does it get in the way of my music when it's on. That said, my fronts are nearly 5 years old and so they are likely to be harder than they should really be and more noisy as a result. Will be good to see what new tyres are like when i swap them out.

How do you find the road noise on the Bridgestones? Are they the Potenza RE050A?

Yes they are, fitted 16th July 2015.
Road noise [:)] not a problem

Its the general condition of the roads in the UK that troubles me !!

well if you want to drive up the A1 to finish off your tyres i'll gladly take you out tho there must be owners closer to your home.

Thanks JCX, I'll be sure to look you up if I'm up that way! I use PARR down in Crawley and the Tonbridge PC for my Porsche bits so will get their opinion on the Bridgestones too and see if they have a car with them on.

Cheers for the feedback though, been really useful.

Although you can fit non N rated tyres we had a presentation by a chap from Michelin at our club night recently. He said that although non N rated tyres may look similar to their N rated brethren there are subtle differences, which are not visible, to cater for Porsche specific characteristics.

My own preference is for Bridgestone too and, as for noise, all 997s suffer from a lot of road noise, whatever the tyre. I measured my cabin noise level at a decent speed on the M5 - not a great surface - and got 100dB! Unhealthily loud for a prolonged period. An issue they addressed on the 991.......
