Tyre Cracks

Had the same issue on my Cayman - they were just rubbish in anything other than totally dry conditions. Closer examination revealed that they were cracked between the treads although they had plenty of 'meat' left on them. If they're perished, they're not going to grip the road properly so they need changed. I'm a big fan of Michelin Supersports If it helps šŸ™‚

 
I still have the original Bridgestone Potenza 265/40Z/R18 tyre fitted to my Cayman. They still have plenty of tread on them, but in between the tread blocks cracks have developed. Should I be looking to age the tyres now? Or, are they ok to carry on with for the time being?
Due to their age, I was looking to change them later in the year unless the advice is to the contrary.

Tony, you don't say how old the tyres are but different sources give maximum ages that tyres should be changed at, some say max four years others say six, mine seldom make it past tow to three years.

Tyres do harden as they age but then it goes to the cracking, I don't know if the different brands change at different rates but it would follow that if some are softer compounds they wear faster and should be flexible for longer, I've tried Continentals, Bridgestones and Michelins Pilot Sports which give the seemingly best of both worlds but they are also the most expensive.

 
With a low mileage summer car I've had a similar issue. My tyres are Pirelli but cracking or obvious signs of ageing were not the issue, rather the DOT code on sidewall. In essence part of the code is month and year of manufacture. Differing brands have slightly different coding systems but it's easy to assess on the web. OPC and specialist that have worked on car suggested change on precautionary basis at 6 years. Seemed fair enough to me. One word of warning; I bought 2 rears from reputable retailer (fitted etc.) I had shopped around for correct tyres and N code. At the time I did not check age of new tyres. Some months later, I realised they were already 3 years (ish) old...

 
You have tyres that are starting to show age related perishing.

Its a high powered sports car... Buy new tyres.

My tyres appear to have been made in October 2010. Time for a new set then.

What are the recommendations out there? Is the Perelli offer via the club worth pursing?

I looked at the Pirelli offer. You have to buy the tyres from the OPC or from a limited number of suppliers and it is not cheap.

It depends what you are using the car for and if you have a preference for a particular manufacturer.

I too had Bridgestones and found them to be great in the dry and not brilliant in the wet.

I have michelins I use for track days and would only ever use michelins for that, they are great on track when they are warmed up but I have found them to be not so good on the road when cold.

I have recently bought Continental sportcontact 3 tyres and found them to be very good. They feel solid, grippy and quiet in the dry and grippy in the wet. I recently had a friend following me in the rain and he said I was leaving dry looking tracks on the wet roads.

They are N2, have rim protection and only cost Ā£420 for the 4.

All my opinion of course, but I think I made the right choice for a general use tyre.

Enlighten me from where please [:)], my Contis are now 6+ years old & paid 700 for them then.... the savings will go well towards my wheel refurb whilst they're being changed....

I got them from camskill.co.uk Ā£423 and Ā£14 delivery. The tyres were date stamped week 06 2016, so February.

My wheels are 17"

 
Just bought new rears for my 981. They are 265 -35- 20 Pirelli PZero N rated and were date stamped 06/16 so very new. Cost me Ā£414 fully fitted for the pair . Best price i could find.
