Tyre Date stamp

Replaced two rear Dunlop SSR tyres with new Dunlop SSR's yesterday.

The fitter pointed out the date stamp on the tyres, - the worn pair were "29 02" and the new pair are "11 02" - made week 29 and 11, so the new ones are 18 weeks older than the pair being replaced. They are "made in Germany" which he said was good, I won't argue.

The rims are really light, I asked to hold them when the tyres were off, - when he said how light [:)] they were.

I wanted to ask to hold them, but he'd have thought I was tapped - and we don't want anyone to know that...[:D]

29 02 ?? What does the 02 refer to George? Surely not 2002? I was under the impression that tyres didn't keep that well... they aren't like fine wine ;-)
I know we have a real issue with our Dunlop supplier on the racing to ensure he's providing tyres that are less than 3 months old.... I would be really NOT keen to put a 5 year old tyre on my car if that is what this means?
Anyone else any thoughts?
Cheers

Week 29 and week 11 2002 -they are better off!! Anything over 5YO should be binned......

I was told that tyres are supposed to have a life of 10 years --- but I wouldn't buy any new which were five years old ---- well, not knowingly !

George,

years ago I was on track with five years old Yoko A008 P. They were less sticky than in new condition, unpredictable and in extreme situations DANGEROUS. In the wet I wouldn´t have driven them from paddock to pit lane.
Normally A008P was a good tyre those days.
The last time I bought Kumhos I was given a 10% discount because the tyre were 15 months old.
So, from my point of view be careful and go for a fresh set of rubber. My experience is: Not older than two years. If tyres are not worn out in that time, bin them. Having used them on track several times means they have been heated up every session. That means after a while you have bricks instead of rubber on your rims.A tyre engineer once told me that age and heat make tyres lose every bit they used to have. I agree.

A fresh set is a big relief and if the extra car control new tyres offer helps avoid an expensive crash it makes even more sense.
