tyre dispute

bought my used 987s 3 months ago having done 7500 miles. its just been in for a new roof mechansim and the guys are saying it needs two new rear tyres. The car has done 10,000 miles now but when i bought the car i disputed the tyre threads and they told me they were ok, i beleive the limit for used sales is 4.5mm at porsche is this correct??/ If so surely it is impossible for me to use up 3mm of tread in 3 months??? I have disputed this with them and am waiting response - would be grateful if somebody would let me now where i stand.

Porsche always reccommend replacing at 3mm - so you may not have used as much as you think.

If the tyres are legal, then it is up to you if you wish not to replace just yet.

Thepoint is that they should of been replaced before i bought the car 3months ago. what is their limit on selling used cars.

porsche cqardiff are saying they sold the car with 6mm of tread on the tyres - which i disputed at the time, they are now saying there is 1.6mm and 2mm on the rears and i have to pay ÂŁ218 per tyre what should i do???

First, go there and take a look with the engineers, with the car on the stand. It's amazing how much more of the tyre you can see from that point of view.

If the tyres really are down to that level, then you need to replace them ... it's just a question of who pays for it. Get them replaced, though ... with 1.6mm it's just not safe if we get a downpour. However, what sort of tyres do you have? If they are Michelin Pilot Sports then it is easy to misread them, as there is a shallow area of tread on the shoulders. An OPC has previoulsy told me that a tyre was illegal when Michelin themselves said to measure it differently, which said it had several mm still to go even before hitting 3mm.

I have a useful email from Michelin which I can forward to you if you want.

If the tyres really are down to 1.6 a mere 2,500 miles after the OPC sold them with (allegedly) 6mm then that is not credible. I would ask for an alignment check, and then suggest they paid for a new pair of tyres if that was ok (on the basis that the 6mm measurement must have been a mistake), or a new pair of tyres plus alignment if not.

Original tyres are unlikely to be at 6mm after 7,500 miles - more likely is 4-4.5mm (which is just over half worn), depending on use.

Typically rear Boxster tyres should last between 8-12,000 miles, probabably a bit more on a 2.7. Put your case and they should at least subsidise the cost of the new ones.

It's rather pointless debating whether or not it's possible to wear 3 mm off a tyre in 3 months. It depends on where you drive and how you drive but on a rear it's very easy.

The problem was leaving the showroom with them on the car in the first place if you were in dispute about the depth of tread. I don't see how you can reasonably expect them to replace them after 3 months use.

(IMHO)

I have to agree once you leave a Main dealer it's yours and the only inprint will be in your wallet 1.6mm or more...

Well i thought the approved used charter stated the tyre minimum tread depth but it doesn't appear to nowadays.

You are on a no win situation - even if the OPC tried to sell the car with lowish tread the 'independent' inspection of vehicle condition be the RAC should have noted anything untoward with the tyres.

Some OPCs say they will change tyres at a higher tread depth value than Porsche recommend (i think Reading OPC mentioned anything less than 5mm to me, which might mean a minimum of 3mm elsewhere ?).

My 19" Michelin Sport rears are probably just under 3mm now after 10500 miles - thatss about 10% motorways, 55% A roads and 35% B roads. I hope to stretch them to13k before i change them. Continentals might not last so long as the Michelins.

But it all depends how you drive, permanent motorway cruising could see 20k from a set whereas enthusiastic driving could be less than 10k.

My business partner bought a used Cayenne from Reading and was told it wouldhave at least 4mm all round. About 2000 miles later, he checked and found the rears were well below 3mm.

Reading gave him new tyres FOC and an apology.

issue resolved cardiff opc have put two new rear tyres on for free. couldn't ask for anything more. except maybe front ones!!!

Cardiff are owned by Dick Lovett and one of the dicussions I had on Thursday with the sales exec who sold me the Boxster, he was telling me about the Dick Lovett goodwill fund which has frequently paid up for RMS work when cars have been out of warranty, so I guess they must have opened up ye old fund for you. I had always heard that their customer service was first class, hopefully this is an example that they are as good as their reputation suggests.

As about 98 percent of an RMS charge is labour at top rates I doubt if RMS is causing them or their 'Goodwill' fund too much grief.

Having bought my car from them and had it serviced by them for the last six years I have to say that their customer service hasn't always been 'First Class'. Swindon have been a marked improvement over Bristol.
