Tyre Help as MOT due

Hi all,

Am looking for some advice. I have a 2006 987 Boxster running 18" "S" wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres of the following sizes and reminaing tread depths.

Front 225/40/18 min tread depth 5mm / 4.5mm

Rear 265/40/18 min tread depth 3mm /2.5mm (inner edge of near side tyre, outer edge and center closer to 3mm)

The MOT is due now and obviously the tyres meet the legal 1.6mm but I think I saw somewhere that Porsche recommends tyres should be swapped at 3mm. Is there anyway that the OPC can refuse to issue a certificate and push me into getting new tyres fitted?

The car will go back into hiding in the warm and is unlikely to be driven for a couple of months so lashing out money on tyres just after christmas isnt high on my list of priorities!!.

My other question relates to what should be fitted to car in the first place, every time I put the reg number into tyre websites they come up with the following sizes
Front 225/40/18
Rear 265/35/18

The 35 profile REARS are coming out significantly cheaper than the 40 profile, will this have any impact on the handling of the car? What do Porsche actually specify?

Many thanks in adavance

Paul

The tyres either pass or fail an MOT, if they have more than or equivalent to the legal MOT requirement then they should pass.
Whether the OPC thinks or Porsche recommends you should have new ones, that is nothing to do with the MOT

As Gary said MOT has nothing to do with OPCs; it is a scheme by the government (run by Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) to ensure safe and consistent standards for vehicles over 3 years old and any licenced MOT centre can do the check and give you a certificate; so just take your car to a good MOT centre you have used before and get the certifcate. Most OPC don't even have an MOT check facility at the centre and they just take you car to a neighbouring centre anyway.

Did a check on various sites for your model year and your back tyres are right at:
Rear 265/40/18

but your front must be a typo, as it should be 235/40/18 not 225/40/18

All the best
