Tyre Help

New member
Gents,

Disaster has struck. After 1600 fun filled miles in my new 987 Boxster I have picked up a screw in the near side rear. Of course its not repairable as it's too close to the sidewall. Ok you say. A couple of hundred quid but not the end of the world. Well actually as it stands nobody has any Continental 265/40 ZR 18 tyres in stock and wont until July!!![][][][] Have Boxster S wheels fitted before anyone says anything.

Any ideas????

They don;t have any or there are none in the country?

Did you ask them if they could get one sooner for you? If not, you'd change tyre brand/other empty threats?

To follow up, can they not get one from Germany/Europe?

What about your Porsche dealer? Can they help? Can they lend you a spare set of wheels with other tyres?

Tried all that. Dealer not returning my calls at the moment.

If you drive a Boxster with these tyres on what ever you do don't get a puncture anytime soon. As you can imagine I am not a happy bunny.

Help.

Try Elite Garages (ad in Porsche Post).

They are a distributor, and got a tyre for me from one of their customers(!) when Conti were out of stock.

BMW had this problem when the old M3 was released, it ate tyres and there were none in the world left after a few months !
bad news really,
Is the tyre definately not repairable to tide you through ?

You're dealer will definitely have a 265/40 ZR 18 somewhere round the back, be it a Conti or otherwise. Unless you are driving on the limit, doing track days or going flat out on the Autobahn (which as your car is spanking new is unlikely), using a different (but N2 approved) make on the same axle will not be a problem if you drive gently.

By the way, don't believe that "nobody" has the tyres. Ring round a few of the performance car dealers in your area and ask them to recommend someone who may stock them. I had the same story a few years ago and the TVR dealer gave me a good lead.

This may not be much help for you but I had a very similar problem to yours 3 years ago. My nearside rear tyre (265/35 ZRx18) was u/s after only 28 miles in my new Boxster!!! A stone was the culprit.

The original tyres were Michelin and when I was informed that a new tyre was required BUT there were none in the UK yet I was shocked (new grading or somehting). However Michelin dispatched a new tyre from Germany direct from the Porsche factory (so they say) so my car was only off the road for 5 days. Surely Continental can do the same for you. They are German, after all and must want to beat the French with customer satisfaction.

I hope you get a resolution soon as I know how you must feel.
