Tyre Insurance

Hi

When I purchased my Cayman R, I'm glad i bought the tyre insurance. It came in very useful yesterday when I had to get my 2 rear tyres replaced due to a puncher in one and a screw in the other. Phoned OPC Chester and by 5pm that same day new tyres fitted must say the service since owning the car has been outstanding (and I don't say that lightly).

Best £350 for 3yrs ever spent.

I think its recommended by Porsche that you don't have them repaired. Plus not sure the could repair them due to area of the punctures close to the tyre wall.

All You don't repair punctures in tyres used on cars capable of 180mph. No dealer should do it. Common sense when you think of it. I know the legal limit 70mph in UK but that's not to say you won't take it to Europe or track it. Its the same as fitting remoulds would you fit them to a Porsche!!! Trevor

i see your point but i've been told that they can be repaired and the only reason they recommend that they're are not is to cover any eventuallity but also they want to sell the tyre insurance/tyres. personally i wouldn't fit a remould to any car i owned never mind whether its a porsche or not. here's a question for you why are the tyres 'N' rated when the standard tyre fitted that isn't 'N'rated is quite capable of handling the top speed and cornering charactaristics etc.i.e pirelli pzero, in fact its capable of handling over 200 mph and are fitted to ferrari, aston martin, R8's none of which are 'N' rated. so i ask is this porsche's way of capturing the tyre market?

Lots of race tyres are remoulds and I would trust a vulcanised tyre repair at 180mph but not much point if you already have tyre insurance! CaymanWirral, I was also at the Chester Porsche garage on Friday, did you see a three year old getting pushed around the showroom in a pedal car by an almost completely grey haired gentleman?

Hi Giff, I didn't get down there till 4pm. There was a grey haired guy in the but no children.

further to my last post... on reading the tyre insurance bumpf it says " will cover unlimited amount of repairs to tyres". you may say this insurance isn't specific to porsche, which may be the case, but its very misleading TBH. sorry caymanwirral new to forum this reply wasn't directed at you don't know how that happened ooops

Regarding the tyre repair debate, if say I was to be taking a car to Germany where I may well exceed 150mph then I would prefer not to have a repaired or an old tyre fitted, also if I had insurance I would prefer two new tyres to be fitted as per Porsche's recommendations. However, if I have some tyres down to around the 4mm of tread level and it is coming into the autumn then I would have a repair and following the change over to my winter wheels I would have a new pair sourced ready for the spring, likewise if new replacements were not available and I was just commuting. I think everyone would agree that in those times when suitable replacements are unavailable which has at times been for weeks or even months it's better to drive than to not drive, just be mindful of what's underneath.[8|]

Hi Para999, I was on my way home on Junction2 M53 (reduced from 2 lanes to 1 with concrete divider walls either side) and debris in the lane, didn't think anything of it till the next morning leaving for work and rear tyres flat. Put tyre weld in them get me to work in Liverpool.

Bin that tyre weld and buy a can or two of Slime's excellent "quick spair", its water soluble unlike the Holts products so the tyre can be easily cleaned after the product has been used and repaired if required.

Sounds good stuff Giff, I looked on ebay but lots of sizes rated for small to "normal" tyres what do you rate for the tyre sizes on our cars?

We need the larger can, I ordered from [link=http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Slime-Quick-Spair-500ml-Tyre-Repair-with-hose-/330813319714?pt=UK_Vehicle_Oils_Lubricants_Fluids&hash=item4d0602aa22#ht_2006wt_1255]HERE[/link] for £7.99 and free next day postage. I've also got the Smart Repair kit in my 3 series since I changed to non-runflats. Its about £20, has even more slime and comes in a bag with its own compressor.

Struggling to see the point of tyre insurance. You pay £350 for 3 years cover. What do you get in return? Hardly seems worth it if its just a repair or even a replacement tyre circa £300-370. Unless you have to hope for two punctures?

Well Graeme, from what has been said and Porsche's insistence that more than 3mm difference in tread depth will probably cause too great a difference in tyre circumference so giving errors in ABS, PSM etc if you have a puncture on a half worn tyre then you need two, supplied on the insurance they have sold you, of course this depends how many sets you get through in the three year coverage period and what the risk of punctures to you is. Does anyone know if it is transferable on sale of the vehicle? Could be a selling point.[;)]
