Tyre life?

Chaps,

Having had my S2 for four years, it seems I am getting through rear tyres at about one set every 10,000 miles and fronts about every 25,000 miles. Those are Falken FK452 tyres all 'round.

Out of curiosity, what sort of rate do you chaps get through tyres on your 944? I am a little disappointed that I am only seeing 10k from the rear tyres (but guess I only have myself to blame!) - I was getting more out of the fronts on my old Golfs than this, and those did the accelerating AND the braking.

Oli, presumably they are wearing nice and evenly and therefore it is a straight "wear" issue rather than a geo or pressure issue?

I haven't done a direct comparison on a 944 but it's a fact that increasing the width of a tyre increases its wear life disproportionately. It was the subject of some good scientific testing (i think) Autocar many years ago, using Golfs on a test track.

Upping the rears to 245/45 from 225/50 will probably give you at least 50% longer tyre life (assuming equal make, compound, driving style etc)


 
I have put around 7.5/8k miles on a set of Toyo T1Rs on my S2 and they don't show any real sign of wear, I can still see the coloured banding round the tread and probably have around 4.5/5mm on both the front and rears. Maybe I drive it too slowly but they seem to be lasting better than expected.

They aren't that evenly worn on the rear. Inside edges are more worn than the outsides, and the central band is more worn than the outsides. Suggesting that the camber is perhaps a bit too aggressive and they are over-inflated.

Sounds like wider tyres may help longevity. That's good going from the Toyo's on your car David.

I think at four years and 20,000 miles you are doing pretty well really. If you got much more than that, it might suggest you were either sticking to long gentle motorway runs or running a harder compound than might be appropriate on a relatively high performance sports car. They do sound to be a bit over inflated. What pressures do you use? The later S2 / Turbo manual greatly increased the published rear tyre pressures to ludicrous levels in comparison to the earlier manual, and most peopel seem to find the earlier pressures are more suitable for everyday use, especially if one is not running flat out on the autobahn at 150+. Might be worth getting the geometry checked to make sure you are not running too much negative camber at the back.
 

I bought a set of D90's 15 months ago and they came with virtually brand new P6000's on them, I have done 20000 miles since and they STILL have 4-5mm of tread on them. I just wish the damn things would wear out so I can justify getting some better rubber [:D]

I think 10k miles for the rears on an S2 is dramatically low for a road car, unless perhaps you driving it at 10/10th all the time, which I think isn't the case. The previous rears on my S2 did 30k miles (S-02). What is the treadwear on the Falkens?
 
Oli...I recently changed my rear Contis @ 19,000 miles/4 years with only a couple of m.m's left for Falkens, the front Contis were changed 24k miles ago and both have worn slightly more on the outer sides of the tread and although they weren't mentioned at MOT, I reckon they need changing soon.

A mixture of pedestrian and spirited driving, so doesn't sound too far different to you.
 
I got 20kmiles and three trackdays and alot of spirited driving out of my Conti Sport 2's. They were not ultra grippy like Toyo's and falkens, but were a good compromise between grip and longevity. Grippy tyres like Toyo's and Falkens will wear more quickly, but on a 944 being a light car and good balance i'd expect more than 10k miles. Are you sure your tyre pressures and tracking are good? Or are you not telling us about your liking for heading out late at night to your nearest out-of-town retail park and joining in with the local scallies and doing donuts all night?


Unfortunately i'm only able to get 12500 miles out of the fronts on the SMAX, so basically a set of front tyres a year, and at £150 each due to the high weight rating they're not exactly cheap.
