Tyre mileage

Just wondering what mileage people get out of fronts and rears. No expereince with the 944 yet as I have not bought new tyres yes.

But tend to get 25000 out of a set of fronts and 40000 out of a set of rears on FWD daily driver (Golf) What is normal?
 
My rear Falkens were put on immediately I bought the S2, and I'm guessing I'll change them after about 30K miles looking at the wear after 20K. That's not driven stupidly, but not gently either. [:)]
 
With the 2 NAs and 1 turbo I've owned I've found the tyre wear relatively low easily pushing 30k on road tyres with mixed / spirited driving!
I personally favour Conti and Pirelli with Hankook being my preferred lower cost option.
 
To be honest, apart from Boxster/996 and later cars which tend to rack up lots of miles, we find that a lot of our customers do not wear their tyres out, they tend to start to crack or perish with age first, around 5 to 6 years.

For this reason, on my 944's I tend to go with super sticky soft compound tyres so I get more wear out of them over the 5 or 6 years..

It all depends how you drive though really, a track day can seriously destroy a set of road tyres, where as some track tyres might last several track days without issues... We have one customer who clocks up 30k miles per year in his S2 Cab and he seems to only need tyres every couple of years, all motorway miles... But then I used to have a customer with a tuned 944 turbo, who never hit the track but could destroy a set of tyres every 5000 miles!
 
Something I am particularly interested in... I always have used the universally hated Pirellis the car came with, and typically got around 20-25k miles out of them. Recently I came across a set of Toyo Proxis at a price I couldn't ignore, so have used them, yes they are much better than the Pirellis in the dry, but probably no better in the wet, and they have only lasted 8k miles... ok, for most people that may be 2-3 years - for me it is just a few months - I'll take the loss of grip for something longer lasting. The Continental winters I don't know how long they last, as I only ran them over the winter - but I think they have done a similar 8-10k miles and not showing significant wear... but would that be equally reflected by the use of a normal tyre in cold conditions? One other thing to note, I had a set on new Pirellis put on the Garage Queen Turbo before the engine problem, so it sat there for a couple of years, and when I brought it out again was able to compare identical tyres, one set which was new, one set which was about 3 years old, but only covered a couple of thousand miles... the difference was huge, where they had aged. I do wonder if this is why people dislike the Pirellis so - because most people will have tried them as years old tyres.
 
Not sure about mileage but I have Pirelli rubber (17inch) on my 968,it is really good for about 50 (minutes) then the performance starts to dip,not a lot of tread even at the beginning [:D]

WOW my Golf GTi is about 15,000 out of a set of fronts max but I am expecting the rears to be similar to yours!

The 944 has had the Falkens on for years and I would reasonably expect them to get old before wearing out, despite a couple of track days, I have done at least 20,000 on them I imagine.

The 911 has now worn out the rears but they are almost at their age limit having been on for about 6 years they done in the region of 20,000. I have been through a set of fronts but mainly because they wore on one edge, but again they had been on for a long time. Hopefully this won't happen to such an extreme amount with after the geo setting I had done last year. I think the fronts have done about 8000 and are still fine.

Good point. My P6000s were very hard, and were perishing. They still had the lowest grip of any tyre I've ever had though, outside of real nasty budget types, by a significant margin. I also had a lot less grip than other 944 owners, noticeable when following them!
 
I'm trying a set of GoodYear Efficient Grip tyres on my '84 and so far I like them. For normal and spirited road use they are quiet and offer predictability in both wet and dry conditions. I've gone with 195/65 r15 as a size on the regular 7" Cookie Cutters.

I'm shortly about to move to 16" Fuchs (7" at the rear and 6" at the front) and considering going with the same tyre in appropriate sizes. At £70 a corner fitted and balanced I don't feel anything other than positive towards them. The other interesting option is these Dunlops, cheaper and 1db quieter too, apparently.

Only done about 500 miles tops on them though so no comment on durability :)
