Tyre noise

Good evening All, My 991.1 TT makes a rubbing noise when I back (and occasionally going forward) on moderate lock. Everything including tyres, wheels and suspension are all stock. It sounds like the tyres are rubbing on the arch but I cannot find any contact or rub marks. I have checked tyre pressures. 34psi front 36psi rear. Any ideas please?

Tony,

I wish I had a pound for every time this question has been raised on the forum, usually about this time of year when temperatures are dropping.

As Jonathan says, wide, low profile tyres plus Ackerman and cold weather contrive to make the front tyres skip over the road surface, which is what you’re hearing. Nothing to worry about.

Jeff, I think you'd have enough to get your OPC to "investigate" [:D]

I've had quite a few cars that have done this and having to explain to people that this is perfectly normal.. I must say that 911's do it louder/more pronounced than other performance cars I guess on account of the engine being in the correct position!

I've only owned my 'first' 911 for 6 weeks now and have noticed the scrubbing noise pretty much every day since the temperatures dropped around a month ago now.

So I decided to swap over my summer tyres(Pirelli PZeros) for the winter set (Michelin Alpin). I wasn't going to bother but after reading up on differences between summer and winter tyres and how they are made and constructed, I went searching for an "unwanted" used set on ebay. It's taken many years for me to finally get my 911 and I begrudge paying another £1500 for a new set of Michelin winter tyres. There are many "used" ones out there fully tested/checked where owners have changed cars, wheels, etc. I quickly found a full set (20" front 245/35's and rears 295/30s for the 911 Turbo wheels) hardly used with +7.0mm on all...and £400 delivered! Got them fitted as my local tyre fitters and they've even stored my summer ones FOC. I'm chuffed as I also didn't think through the delivery part. I had them delivered to my house rather than the tyre garage (idiot!)..so then had to lug them into my wife's Evoque and up to the tyre garage! Anyhow, what a service from both supplier and tyre fitters!

I had the scrubbing as I pulled out of my drive/garage (snow and ice still on the road but melted enough to get her up the road) on the way to the tyre fitters and funny enough on the way back and since it's all been quiet...therefore I would conclude it's the hard summer tyres versus the softer tread winter tyres in the cold.

That is a really great answer thanks Steve and very helpful. Where else might you suggest are good places to look for such tyres apart from ebay please?

Hi Tony,
If it's 'used' you're probably fairly limited to an ebay search but remember to search for many text combinations. i.e. tyre size for example "245/35" and "245 35" as people list in various ways and then same for tyre make and model, and car make ...I found mine after a number of searches as a full set for a Porsche ("PORSCHE FITMENT 2 X 245/35/20 91V and 2 x 295/30/20......NO RATED MICHELIN...") and for collection (this puts some people off) being sold by a tyre fitter in Birmingham after a customer changed their wheels. BUT no-one bid and I then just went direct and asked for delivery and negotiated a deal!

Outside of that if you're looking for new ones then you'll see some deals in the Porsche Club GB magazine - I've seen PZeros at reasonable prices BUT I'd go looking online at both mytyres.co.uk and www.blackcircles.com at current online deals to get your benchmakr. You've also got Costco in UK who sell Michelin tyres https://www.costco.co.uk/view/c/hardware-tools-diy/tyres and they often do deals for pairs or set of four. Michelin's are not cheap though.

But as I said for a new one you're looking at around £350 a tyre where a used one in comparison at around a third of the cost...but everyone has a preference and different budget. :)

Happy hunting...

All the best

Steve
