Tyre Pressure Advice

Just bought some 17" genuine used 968 Cup 1's with part worn P zero 'C' tyres -- for trackday use. Christmas present to myself!

Has anyone had experience of this tyre on a 968? would be good to get some feedback.

Also, any advice on what tyre pressures cold? aiming for what pressure hot? I have read a bit on 968.net that suggests 36 cold, aiming for about 40 hot.

Finally, on this sort of question reference is usually made to the need to take tyre temperatures immediately you leave the track and adjust accordingly. Can anyone recommend a source of a cheaply priced tyre pyrometer? Saw one for about £400 -- so will not be buying that one!

bye

Pressures sound a bit high hot. Certainly straight after a run you may realize 40, but lower to 36 and see how it feels.

You should be able to get pyrometer for a oner. Try Grand Prix Racewear or Demon Tweeks.

Paul, out of interest where did you find the wheels? I'm on the lookout for some and only ever see replicas advertised.

After not finding what I wanted - had tried to get some via forums & kept my eyes open etc -- no result. I then trawled for various places that might have them and last weekend I e-mailed about a dozen specialist breakers and wheel businesses. As you suggest plenty offering replicas or genuine wheels from other models (wrong offsets).

Got 3 replies which gave hope:

Porsch-Apart (Bury, Lancs) had exactly what I wanted, seemed a bit pricey at first but we had a discussion centred around a package which included some part worn Pirelli P zero's. On balance bought the lot as if I had to fit new tyres it would of been even harder on my cash flow. Also, was lucky enough to know someone up there who could pick them up, so I saved on carriage. Total almost £730 -ouch! www.porsch-apart.co.uk

Jasmine Porchalink have probably the best reputation for genuine Porsche wheels, no used ones though, top dollar (£950+VAT) but reading between the lines they have loads of 17" wheels with similar offsets but not actual 968 ones at this time. They expect to get more. www.jasmine-motorsport.co.uk

Finally, got a reply from a Dutch outfit run by 2 brothers, they have a genuine set at Euro 1000 (about £725), OK but with some scratching. I think there might be VAT to pay either there or on importing. E-mail Rob www.v-zweeden.com

If you can be patient and want cheaper priced ones, then the best thing to do is regularly ring or e-mail a list of specialist breakers -- also keep an eye on ebay. Given time I hope you will succeed.

With Pirelli P-Zero C tyres, from memory I would recommend aiming for around 30 psi hot.... that's about what we used to run them at in the Porsche Classic championship.

As for what to expect.... they are a good tyre, with nice progressive breakaway but which tend to "go off" relatively quickly once heat is generated. Good wet grip and feel.

ps..... I think I have some 205/55/16 and 225/50/16 in the garage somewhere, I'm open to offers

Thanks for the pointers Paul. I'm not looking for trackday wheels, just direct replacements for the 16" cups for purely aesthetic reasons. From what I've read, the replicas are pretty heavy hence I'm looking for OEM.

Although with my avatar, maybe I should get some chromed 20's [;)]

Paul, I know a number of the 944 boys use P Zero C's on track and they were advised by Andrew Sweetenham (one of the Porsche Cup 944 Turbo racers) to get to 32-34 hot. 40 hot seems way too much and the tyre will be overinflated and only truly gripping in the centre.

I use Pirelli slicks and aim for 30-32 hot - they grip like stink once they are fully warmed up [:D]
