Tyre pressures and coolant level?

Tizzy

New member
Doing a few miles in the 944 2.7 now and really getting to know the handling etc. Lots still to do but two hopefully simple questions:

1. Front tyre pressures - 15” wheel 195 tyres. Handbook and car sticker says 29psi. However turn in when pushing on seems a little soft and understeery. Shocks are new so wondered if anyone has had similar and recommeds a higher pressure? I’m going to try 32 to see if there’s much difference.

2. Coolant level. Like almost all 944’s I’ve seen, my expansion tank is so discoloured that it’s imppossible to see the coolant level between min-max. As I have a slight coolant leak anyway I’ve been topping it up to a level that you can just see it under the cap, but don’t want to overfill. I’ll replace the tank eventually as I’ve seen new ones on the Internet for a not inconsiderable £120! But again any suggestions for how full it should be when viewed from the cap much appreciated!

Many thanks

Chris

Hi Chris

I run my tyres at 32 psi which works for me although I have 16's and my handbook says 36 psi! Very crashy at 36 psi especially with my suspension mods.

The min and max are marked on the outside of the expansion tank, on the top, and should be visible although you may struggle to see the level inside. I find its easier if you squeeze a hose and the water moves about but the max level is about an inch below full to the brim in the tank.

Many thanks

Will try 32 psi and report back as I guess useful info for others (my rears are 36 on 215’s and seem fine).
Re. The expansion tank, by trial and error I found that putting my iPhone torch right over the filler neck then the inside of the tank was illuminated enough to see the fluid level pretty clearly. Was around min level so glad I did.

Update re. Tyre pressures for anyone who’s running the 15” wheels. 32 on the front makes a very significant difference compared to 29, much sharper turn in, with no noticeable deterioration in ride quality. Might be tyre related obviously but was worth doing for me.

If you use a heavily coloured coolant (Comma Red for example) it's a lot easier to see the level from above.

I use Eurocarparts premium antifreeze which is pink/red slightly fluorescent even when diluted 50/50.
After lots of soul searching ,checking everything on the red 924S track car,new thermostat, replacement header tank, multiple bleeding, checking for cylinder head gasket leak using the chemical test, which was negative,I was still losing coolant after spirited drives which turned out to be from the filler cap overflow-a new cap didn't stop it so--I now top up the header tank to halfway between the MIN-MAX marks.

Result-level now stays exactly there even after sprinting around Curborough in the hot summer weather followed by 78mph drive home to Formby.

Thanks for everyone‘s feedback. The next problem was a strange loss of p/steering fluid dripping out from under the o/s front wheelarch liner. Initially I thought it was the power steering pump leaking, but Cavendish Porsche had a look at it today and diagnosed it as the p/s fluid cooler, which has apparently corroded. It’s another part that apparently Porsche no longer make but there is a pattern part available - it’s not that expensive but add 2.5 hours labour and it’s another unexpected expense, but one that will have to be done!
