Tyre Pressures

I have a 1991 C2. I am told that the recommended pressures as show in the Drivers Manual have been changed to 36psi all round. is this true and do different size wheels require different pressures ?

Also what about C4 tyres.

In the ' Divers Manual' the pressure only lasts as long as I can hold my breath.

However, the DRIVERS manual suggests 44psi rear and 32 front ? (can' t remember the latter) Seems way to high and I and others have successfully and more comfortably run 36psi (cold) all around on both C2 & C4.

It' s just my opinion, but I believe that all the official Porsche pressures are pretty high. Later 944 S2' s and Turbos are officially supposed to be 36psi front and 44 rear. I ran with this for my fist year of ownership and experienced high wear in the middle of all my tyres tread []

I now run at 32psi front and 36 rear which brings an even wear pattern.

Many theories for this on the 944 Register but the one I like is Porsche have recommended these pressures to stop blowouts when running over 150mph on the Autobahn. At those speeds the tyre will overheat if the pressure is too low.

Any other ideas?

Higher pressures = less rolling resistance therefore higher top speed.

Thanks for your replies I will take them up to 36.
I have recently done a track day. Would you advise putting the the tyre pressues up?

If you mean up for the track day, no, they will go up a fair bit from the heat on track, so start lower and check often.

Like RobMug says ...keep 'em at 36 , they will get hot and pressure then goes up so keep checking it and letting it back to 36 . Your 964 handbook tells you that 36 front and rear is the recommended pressure for 17 inch wheels so why change it ??

PS on the track a little less pressure in the front helps reduce understeer , however on the track its the rears that tend to get really hot and 'balloon'....you might detect the effect....for an average driver and a standard car 36 all round is good enough.

Walt, it depends upon 16 or 17 inch rims, most cars were supplied with 16's which should be 36/44 start, 17's should be 36/36 start. You then tailor it to your choice by a couple of pounds.

Jamie,

is your old 964 C2 RS look-a-like grey in colour black wheels with 1/2 cage and recaro seats. I've seen this car around Holland Park in London

Yep, that's my old car. I live in Holland Park, and sold it to a guy who lives in Norfolk, however he sold it (to move onto a real RS - as I did) back to an Aussie guy who lives round the corner from me (who was the under bidder when I sold it originally !). Small world hey ! The car has been back in the area for about six months, but I've not seen it around yet, although I'm in regular contact with the current owner, who seems to be enjoying it !

Jamie

ps Just remembered, it's the car in my avatar (d'oh !!!!)
