Tyre profile choice

From memory the 7J teledials are either 195/65/15 or 215/60/15. I fitted 195/65/15 dunlop fast response to mine (before i swapped to D90's) and was impressed. You can find them for around £45 each.

I have a 1982 944 fitted with 15" x 7J Teledials, fitted with 195/60/15 tyres which need replacing. Can someone advise me whether the correct fitment is 195/60/15 or 195/65/15. Being as the tyres will need replacing I would like to fit a set with a lower profile. Can someone advise what tyre options are available without creating any problems in the handling department as well as speedo error or fouling of the arches. I am also concerned how wide I can go on a 7J rim.

Thanks in advance for your comments

Hi I've got 215/60s on my cookies (15x7J) on a 1983 944 Lux and the speedo is EXACT according to the satnav! I bought 4 Khumos fitted for £200 and they are a vast improvemant on the Goodyear Eagles of unspecified vintage, on when I got the car. No probs in handling from the bigger tyres. Mike

I have 225's on my 944S, slightly overkill and probably a bit more than the tired suspension is capable of exploiting but fun nonetheless [:D]

As stated: 196/65/15 or 215/60/15 (or 185/70/15 too). 215s are definitely better than 195s. I have 195s on my series two now but its less than impressive. I actually prefer the way that the 235/45s drive on my tracker, even with the tramlining.....

I've gone from 225's to 195's whilst painting the wheels and it's a major step back in grip levels, although they're arguably more exploitable (and fun) at lower speeds.
