Tyre question

I run Michelin Pilot Sport N1s on my 996 with around 5m left all round. I need a new rear 285/30/18/ZR N1 and are finding it impossible to locate one. Apparently these are now discontinued and now I have to get the N3s. I'm loath to replace the pair of rear tyres, or heaven forbid all 4! but does anyone know whether I can mix an N3 on o/s/r with an N1 on n/s/r? Thanks.

From what I gather, Porsche say don't mix and Michelin say its ok as long as they are the same tyre type on the same axle.

As per Steve's link.

Michelin told me it was fine to put N3s on the rear of my 996C4 without replacing the N1s on the front but you need matching pairs on each axle.

Thnks for the feedback. I had to bite the bullet and purchase a pair of N3s for the rear. So now I have N1s on the front and N3s on the rear. I'd have kept the one "good" rear N1 and offered it out FOC to the first taker but it was just too worn/scuffed around the edge - track day use. If I experience any issues with the N1/N3 mix I'll report it.

Paul, I have just replaced the rears on mine with non-N rated Michelin Pilot Sports (cheaper) - the general consensus amongst the 3 tyre dealers I spoke to was that the N rating wasn't essential for my C2.

now that should spark some heated debate[:D]

hi have we all been sucked in by the tyre comanies and porsche i would think that millions of euros change hands for that little N has anyone quantified the difference beetween say a ps3 and a ps3 with an N rating
how many of us as drivers would think they could tell the difference beetween the above mentioned tyres i would hazard a guess that they are both made from the same compound with the same tread pattern and depth dimensions load rating which probably means the only difference would be which ever manufacturers rating they put on it or do i have it all wrong

Someone posted some photos of the same tyres (make size model) with and without N markings - I can't remember which make it was, but the tread pattern was completely different.

I'm not saying this is the case for all the N-approved makes, but it was certainly the case with one!

I never found a great deal of difference between N and non-N rated tyres of the same type. I recall that when I used Pirellis they were cheaper at the time.

One thing that would worry me; should you be unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, are you leaving yourself open to giving the insurance company an excuse for not paying out? []
