Tyre recommendation part ii.......

Hi,
After lots of advice the following are the recommendations received from multiple sources but conflict each other!!!!!

Toyos - good in dry but some don't like in wet - several on here recommended

Falkens - overall ok but not sure they are the best you can get are they a compromise but good price - recommended on here

Dunlop sp sport 9000 - recommended by my local Indy porker garage who also saloon car race, say they are the best in wet and dry you can get.

Goodyear f1s - some good reviews but Indy said they roll a lot as side walls are not very rigid so don't handle that well although good grip

Not unsure what to buy. I like the idea of the dunlops from the recommendation but no one on here mentioned them.......

Not too worried about the cost as use the car every day so want the performance more than anything else. Any addit help please...
Yours puzzled

I have just bought 4 x Bridgestone S02 n rated tyres and I have to say they are fantastic in every way so far!

I went from S02 to SP9000 and prefer the sp9000, Wear better and more predictable break away. Think they are more grippy in the wet but less slightly less so in the dry relative to S02. I run them at 32psi, found 36 too high,

My own experience, in a nutshell

Falken 452's- cheap, good grip all round, quiet

Toyo T1-rs - More expensive, bit noiser better grip in dry, same in wet, higher wear rate.

Pirelli P6000's, more expensive, noisier, less grip, last forever

BridgestoneS02's more expensive again good grip wet and dry. noisy.

For normal road use where you aren't pushing the limits I would say the Falkens, simply because the others aren't worth the additional cost.

Also worth considering (although I haven't tried them)

Faken 912's- supposedly not quite as grippy as 452's but better in cold conditions
Uniroyal rainsport 2's apparently good in dry and very good in wet, but can be a pricey.

Many thanks again for the input, think I will go with the dunlop SP9000s primarily but if they are too much $$ or hard to get hold of will opt for the close second of the bridgestones.

thanks

I had Falken 452's - which were OK at the rear but I changed them as just was not sure and the fronts were not falkens so wanted 4 of the same.

Then I had continentals sport contact N1 - which seemed very hard. By then end of them I was worried giving it throttle on wet corners. Little grip whatsoever and used to spin at will even in the dry. They were also very very expensive.

I have recently moved to Toyo T1-S which apparently are the updated T1-R. I have been very impressed with them so far, I just drove 2000 miles to the south of france and back, they were quiet on the french motorways, progressive in the heat and corners, and only when really pushed would they feel like breaking away. I have more confidence on these than the others I have used.

I will say though the toyos don't seem sit as nicely on the rim as the contis. especially on the rear (245,45,16 rear, 225,50,16 front 7/16, 9/16 D90's) they just dont seem as wide as the contis even though they are exactly the same specs, they look a little rounder with a seemingly higher sidewall.

I would recommend the Toyos.

Cheers

I have only limited experience of the tyre options for the 944 but, for what it's worth:

Continental Contisport - used these for most of my ownership of the car. Acceptable wear rate and steering feel but perhaps a little lacking in wet grip.

Goodyear Eagle F1 - good grip but completely spoilt the steering feel of the car, with lots of tramlining.

Michelin Pilot Exalto - for my money, the near-perfect tyre for the 944. Very grippy in all conditions and absolutely superb steering feel. I am very reluctant to move away from these now.

regards
Nick

Also I believe the only N rated approved tyre for the 944 in the 16" size?

Hi

Just my ten pence worth.

I have just put these on my car VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA and they are excellent.
Little bit more than the Toyo's I think but well worth it.

Nick Appleton had them on his 300bhp 944 Turbo and was very pleased with them too.

Hey guys

Did some searching for topcis about tyres, seems this ones the most recent.
I need a full set, after reading this and about 4 or 5 other topics I'm really still not sure! lol! Its great to have a good range of opinions and discussions tho!
Seeing as I'm not racing this car or really ragging it around country bends at silly speeds...

What would you recommend for a good quality long lasting tire that I don't need to worry about much in the wet and slippery conditions? I guess what's the best all rounder a n00b should go for? But most concerned about grip in the wet and sliperry/icy conditions?
Cheers!

My garage has recommend Continentals
Other people seem to recommend Toyo T1 R's, Falkens (FK452?), Yokohama AS430's, Uniroyal Rainsport ...

It's really hard to find a clear comparison because nobody can afford to go out and try all the options on the same car!

What we need is a group test from one of the Porsche magazines "¦

Yea that would be nice, or something more conclusive online. This website is a nice idea, but there's very few reviews there for 944 tires - http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyres_For/Porsche/944.htm

Also bear in mind that we aren't comparing apples with apples here. Differences in geo and suchlike between cars will favour different tyres, and all of this is subjective; one guy's "Great in the wet" is another guy's "I'm scared of using full throttle if it's anything other than bone dry". And that's before you get into personal preference (I like tyres that break away progressively, others will prefer maximum ultimate grip.)

Try as many brands as you can. Work out what you like. And remember that unless you are a superb driver, the tyres won't be the weakest part of the car-driver system ....

Oli.

Also, it makes a considerabel difference what wheels you are on as a lot of the possible candidates do not in practical terms seem to be available in all the required sizes. Apart from the Toyo T1-R, it is very hard to find a suitable tyre which is readily available in all the standard sizes for just the late cars ( e.g. 205/55 16 S2 front; 225/50 16 S2 rear or Turbo front; 245/45 16 Turbo rear)

If you want a tyre that lasts then Pirelli's P6000 seems to go on for ever. Mine have covered approx 20,000 miles and still have 4mm on the front and 3mm on the rear.

They are a bit rubbish though [:D]

Other ones to consider are Falken's 912 (as opposed to 452 as they are a bit cheaper but seem to get good reviews as well)

Uniroyal Rainsport 2's seem to get good reviews, as does the new Rain Expert, but depending on your wheels you may struggle to find Rain Experts for the rear.

Its a difficult choice

Hmm decisions decisions!

Is it safe to say that generally peeps on here agree that Toyo's and Falken's are the accepted brands overall?

Also what are peeps thoughts on Continentals that my garage recommended me? Obviously they're not driving 944's every day for long distances and all that!

I put Toyo T1R on my S2 two years and 10Kmiles ago 255/45/17 rear 225/40/17 fronts at a cost of £370 and they have worn brilliantly (contrary to what most people said) they still have 4-5mm of tread right across the width and look great.

They are brilliant in the dry but as mentioned previously a bit tricky in the wet but nothing major probably the same as most tyres when faced with rear wheel drive and a few horse power. Mine have never let go in the wet but I dont drive it that hard, I will be buying them again when and if they ever wear out.

Ouch!

My garage (who's just done my MOT) has been ringing around loads of places for me for a set of 4 tyres ... and they're really struggling! They tell me the only sets of 4 they've found for my tyre size (I think front 205-55-15 / rear 215 60 15) are Goodyear or Falkens (he's going to confirm what model number) ... but they'll be around £330-ish for the Falken and £398 for the Goodyear!

No mention of S02's. Toyo's, etc :(

The ones you guys have ... have you managed to get a set of 4 or are you putting 2 on the back of one make and 2 on the front of another?
If you have got sets of 4's can you recommend some places for me? (I'm in Nottingham)

Sorry!
Cheers!
