Would anyone care to share their experience of tyres on the standard 14" rims i.e. the 185/70 size - I am after something for use during the winter so a tyre with good wet grip as well as dry - I am happy to compromise tyre life for grip (within reason i.e. I'm not after track day tyres).

I always had a problem with my 924S's breaking traction even with new tyres in the wet/damp until I got some Vresdestein winter tyres which ld swear by. Of course these were on 15's but if they do 14x185x70 for your 2.0 I'd recommend them, as they transformed my cars.

My 2.0 came with Bridgestone B530s 205/60 on standard 14" rims. Rather too much grip for the poor old 2.0 litre engine.
It is now on the 15" option rims with the same 205/60 profile tyres (different make) and the ride and handling is much better.

Thanks for the steer. This was enough to give me some direction on research after which I decided that I do want full-on winter tyres for the winter months; I didn't realise that they are considered more effective than summer tyres from 7 centigrade!
After looking at availability in the correct size and looking at a few tyre test reports (though admittecdly not all like for like comparison) it was between the Pirelli and Vredestein with the latter winning based on a poor wet conditions showing by the Pirelli in one German test I found. So hopefully a set of Snowtracs will be on the car sometime soon and I can consign the super slippy (though doubtless super long lasting) Hankooks to the bin...

Glad to be of help, I only found the Vredesteins by elimination almost after going through quite a few makes, previously the car was horrible at any roundabout even in just-damp conditions even with only mild throttle, not even like oversteer just a disconcerting "slither" - spoiled the fun of it as those conditions make up probably 75% of motoring in the UK!
