Tyre recommendations?

Has anyone got any recommendations on tyres - specifically for a 997 on 19-inch rims? My Conti Sport Contact 3s will soon be up for a change (ouch). I'm happy enough with them though if there's a tyre out there that will deliver the same sort of grip but with less road noise, I'd love to know about it.

I have not experienced Contis on a Porsche so I can't draw comparisons but my Gen I tt had Michelin Pilot Sport and my present car has Pirellis. I was pleased with the grip of both of these tyres (although the Pirellis so seem grippier but that my be the difference caused by PTV and dynamic engine mounts etc). The Michelins served me for about 13k miles and had 1k to 2k left on them, particularly the fronts. The Pirellis have covered less than 5k and still have quite a bit of meat on them so I can't yet say how they will last.

Hi Nick,

I'm sure you'll get as many recommendations as there are tyre manufacturers! [;)]

You need to check what's available first as Porsche tyre sizes seem in short supply in some areas.

If you do get a choice, many in 997 Register like the Bridgestones, but if you're happy with what you've got then maybe stick with them.

If you can wait a little while, Michelin Pilot Super Sport appear to have a performance advantage and have just been homologated for 997, but may not be available for the range until later in the year, although they are beginning to make an appearance on 991's.

Whatever make of tyre you choose, ensure it is 'N' rated no matter what you may be told to the contrary. This confirms it has been tested and approved by Porsche. The marking is usually N0, N1 or N2 and can be found on the sidewall.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Clive.

If you like the Conti's (like me then), I went for a full set of Continental Sport Contact 5P and they are really fabulous.
Grip is superb, noise - what noise, the sport exhaust is all I hear - great in wet and look terrific on 19".
Checked with insurance Co. first as I'd read about the 'N' rating stipulation but they were fine about it - just as long as they are bone-fide suitable manufacture??!

Enjoy your Conti's
Roelof.

An extract from Porsche Cars Great Britain Ltd offiical website is as follows:

N rating

"......Unique to Porsche, the "ËśN' rating is given to tyres that have been approved by Porsche engineers in Weissach. Porsche Centres guarantee this standard by only fitting "ËśN' rated tyres to Porsche vehicles.

Advances in tyre technology mean that tyre wear or even mixing different brands, patterns or "ËśN' numbers, even if from the same manufacturer, could result in an increase in road noise and significant changes in shock absorption, steering and smooth handling......"

You can check it out here.

Clive.

And in addition to the above if you have a Porsche warranty/extended warranty it won't pass the 111 point check with non N rated tyres.
Bridgestones for me, btw. All makes are noisy on the 997! An issue they have addressed on the 991!

The quietest tyre I ever had on a 911 were the Contis..
I changed to another brand and they were quiet a bit louder... however the contis only lasted a few thousand miles on the rear [&:]
I loved the grip of the conti but my 997 was on Bridgestones which were excellent but as per the 997 it does transit a fair bit of road noise.

I've got a couple of thousand miles still to go, I guess, so I might see what's available then. Thanks for your input - you're right, everyone has their favourites and it's hard to do an objective comparison unless you're either Porsche or a tyre manufacturer.

I suspect there won't be a lot of difference between brands - probably the biggest single difference that I could make would be to change from the 19-inch rims to 18, and I'm certainly not that fussed about road noise!

I can't agree there. [8|] Tyres are the single most important factor affecting handling characteristics. It is after all, the sole contact between you and the road and each brand has its own individual features. If you're changing wheel diameter, you need to give careful thought as to how this will affect your car not the least contact patch and gearing, unless the rolling radius remains the same.

I've run both the Michelin PS2 N2s and the new Pirelli PZero N-rated to/from the Ring, and also around the Ring at pace.

The PZeros are are more responsive (stiffer sidewalls), quieter at the limit (Michelins squeal early), but they transmit alot of road noise into the cabin. They offer stupendous grip in the dry.

The PS2s are softer, squeal earlier before you reach the limit, and break away quite gradually. Their ride is more comfortable, and they transmit less road noise into the cabin. But you can feel that they offer a fraction less grip compared to the PZeros and are just slightly less responsive.

Overall, the PZeros are a more aggressive tyre with sharper handling characteristics. But the PS2s are a more comfortable road tyre, although they do provide slightly less grip and responsiveness compared to the PZeros. Between the two? It depends on what you want from a tyre.

Well there are some complete bargains for someone here....[:)]

An update on Super Sports:

My ever helpful service guy at Exeter was at Porsche GB on Saturday for the Porsche GT3 challenge technical visit and attending was the head of Michelin GB motorsport / track days and he confirmed the super sports haven't received homologation for the N rating yet, he did say the first tyres would be for the 991's followed by other Porsche models. He said he would keep me updated which I will in turn pass on.

An apparently never ending saga..

This seems to conflict with info. received direct from Michelin back in the summer, when the story then was there had been a few technical issues, but these had been resolved and tyres were now homologated for Porsche and would firstly be produced for 991 then 997, probably towards the end of this year or early 2013.

So we'll have to wait to see which is correct. [8|]

We had Steve Dolby from Michelin at our club night last week and he confirmed that they were working to get an N rating for the 991/981 with 20 inch rims but there were no immediate plans for 18 or 19 inch rims.

Just goes to show, there's not too much reliable information available - even from Michelinman himself! [:(] [:D]

Clive.
