tyre size and speed rating

Just a quick question, does anyone know what the correct tyre size and speed rating the tyres should be on a 91 944 cab?

The reason I ask is while out look at one this week, it had a set of P6000 on it which where in good nick, but I'm not sure if they had the correct speed rating.

Thanks

P6000s are the work of Satan. Why anyone would put tyres made of Bacolite on a performance car is utterly beyond me.

They will be OK speed rating wise though.

I agree!!!!!

But , if I buy the car do I want to spend £600 stright away , if the tyre are legal and OK for insurance purposes???

Absolutely yes, mine had Dunlop Winter Sports on the front and Milanza Heroes on the back when I collected the car - suffice to say the difference between them and my new Toyo T1-Rs was night and day!

(Admittedly on 'new' D90s too, rather than 17" Boxster twists.)

This is what I did with my cab's P6000s... They are the correct rating as I said earlier (I just can't remember what that is right now - Z maybe?)

Actually they lasted 2 days of that - I thought the track was going to wear out first! Even after that the fronts were still legal until I put them on the back at a RWYB day and did burnouts.

P6000s are truly dreadful. For the 944 (of any type) they should be V rated as a minimum. You can get P6000 in 15" and 16" sizes that are H rated, so watch out.

(Good to see you back, Fen)

Scarily, a friend of mine has P6000s on his Griffith 500.

Considering he uses it everyday, in all weathers, I do wonder how long it'll be before he or his Griffith is no more.

I bow to your superior knowledge of crap tyres [:D]

V is up to 149mph I think, which I therefore believe means the S2 (and centrainly Turbo) need the next rating up don't they?

Yes, I wasn't clear. What I meant was V was the absolute minimum for a 944 (i.e. the Lux and S), but as you rightly say the S2 and turbo need Z or better (W, Y)

Entirely down to you really.

No they are not the grippiest, sportiest tyre out there but if they are legal and you don't want to fork out straight away then they will be fine. I had a set on my Turbo when I first bought it and the fronts lasted 40k miles in my ownership with no drama (40k shows you just how hard they are).
