Tyre Size question-ABS Related...

Hi guys

Just running through a few things on my new S2 and front tyres are needed. The PO fitted a new set of 245/40 17 Falkens on the rear and I was wondering what size front tyres I should fit to match this? It has 205 50 17s at the moment which need replaced. Also the ABS light comes on above a certain speed, could the combination of new rears and low fronts trigger this? I'd like to fit the right tyres to it first before I start investigating sensors etc.

Cheers

Brian

225/45 is what you need Brian, fit them and then see how you get on with the ABS problem.

Its funny you should mention this, I was slightly confused about a 944 turbo in the workshop earlier today which is in for brake work.. Following a couple of test drives to get to the bottom of a brake problem, I found the ABS to be completely not working, even though the lamp comes on and goes off during when starting the car and the abs light never grumbles even when the wheels are locking up.

Looks at the moment like some dodgy bugger at some point has had a failed ABS sensor, so decided to install a resistor in place of the ABS sensors on the car, so the ABS ECU thinks the car has never moved from a standstill!!

Ah the joys of old cars. On mine the light performs as it should when I start it, then the abs cuts in early all the time at low speeds for the first few miles before throwing the towel in and sticking the light on. My last two 944's didn't have abs so I'm not fussy about it, I just think if it's there it should work. Plus there's always the MOT to worry about.

225/45 is closer to the rolling radius of the rears than 205/50, but there's less than 1mm in it (although in reality the wheel width will come into it as the sidewall will be less stretched on the 225 tyre), so doubt that would make much difference regarding ABS faults.

What width wheels are fitted to the front?

To be honest i thought it was a long shot but worth a try seeing as it needs tyres anyway. Not sure of the offset, all I can see stamped on the wheels is 7 and 55 either side of the valve if that helps? It's these wheels
