Tyre sizes all season tyres

Hi All

I'm looking to replace the tyres on my 2009 Cayenne S. On 20 in rims with the recommended 275/40/20. I was planning to go for an all season tyre next as the weather in Devon and a couple of weeks in the alps doesn't really justify both summer and winter tres. I was looking at Goodyear LS2 Eagle all season or Pirelli Scorpion Verde all season. However neither come in exactly the right size. I can get 275/45 or 264/45.

Any one any experience / advice. I can probably live with the 2-3% speedo error but would rather not if someone can suggest an alternative in the right size.

Hi Neil,

I bought a set of second hand 18" Porsche wheels for my Cayenne S for £300 and some slightly higher profile Michelin Snow and Ice tyres to match for £500 and took the car to the Alps last year. We didn't even need snow chains they were so good. It was a bit of an expense but I found that by having both sets (the changeover costs me £15 from my local garage when I can't be bothered to do it myself), I can spread the use of them which means they last longer plus I get that winter grip needed.

I did had some all season tyres on my old Audi A4 Avant but they didn't handle the snow and ice very well so it was a false economy.

Personally I would never go back now I have tried these Michelin tyres. I leave them on for about 4 months of the year and they are fine on normal roads even in dry weather. They provide minutely less grip in the dry but only if pushed hard round corners is not noticeable. I would be quite hacked off if I bought tyres for the winter that didn't work in the snow and ice and its great to be able to use my car in any conditions whatever the weather.

Belt and braces...

Regards
Ben

Hi Ben,
I had been considering the alternative you mention, its just a matter of some where to store a second set. Garage full of sailing kit!

As I discovered yesterday, you should talk to your OPC. Porsche massively subsidise winter wheel and tyre sets and you will pay less than the cost of a set of wheels for an entire set of wheels and tyres. And they may be able to store your summer set for you to save clutter at home. There are many size options for all Porsches and you don't need to run 20" on the Cayenne.

Hi Neil

I have a similar issue. One shed is full of boat gear as well but I made a makeshift table and wheels fit snuggly underneath. I just didn't want the hassle the having to change the tyres over every year and summer tyres are best for summer weather. The winters only go on for a few months from Nov. I are also found that with both sets I just don't have to replace my tyres as intern. I guess only because they are sharing the load though. I would add though that snow and ice tyres knock the socks off all others when the snow is deep. Many people were struggling last year I'm France but we just sailed through. Didn't even have to put the chains on.

Bit the bullet and got a set of genuine 18in off E-bay with Pirelli M+S not the full Alpin snowflake marked one, but will do for this year and only 450, rims in pretty decent nick too.

Can no longer get in to garage without moving the 20in rims but I can sort that out later some how.

Now need a recommendation for summer 20in tyres

I presume that'd be the D-sport Dueler N0 rated ones, wet grip C and noise 73db

Must say I'd been looking at some none N rated ones, as tyre technology seems to have moved on and they seem on paper to have better spec (wet performance and noise especially than all the N rated ones) even if not formulated for Porsche eg Dunlop Quattrmax wet grip A noise 68db) , Michelin LAtitude sport 3 ( wet A, noise 72db) Pirelli scopion zero assemiterico (wet B and 72db)

anyone tried any of these?

Neil
