Tyre wear & FOC replacement??

I'm about to take my 987 Boxster in for its first, 20k, service. Checking the tyres this morning I find 5/4 mm all round apart from the last one. Whooa!!! The rear near side is 2mm in the middle & 4mm at the edge. Classic over inflation I think BUT I check regularly & they are always within a lb or so. Weird. Anyway, the real issue is that they are all Conti Sport N0 which are no longer available. Local OPC tell me that Porsche GB were funding replacements FOC a year ago when Conti were in short supply but no they are discontinued they are NOT!!! So I'm looking at a whole new set for the sake of a funny wear rate on one tyre. Anyone any experience of Porsche policy on this???
Any advice gratefully received.

Under the warranty, it is entirely possible that you will be required to replace the entyre (ouch!) set. Much depends on how charitable the OPC is. I don't think they can force you to have them done by Porsche, though - one of the few items you can have done independantly (another is the MoT test).

Yes, Spyderman, that thought had occurred to me. I'm not sure of the PGB logic in replacing a whole set FOC when they were 'in short supply' but refusing now that they are 'unavailable'. Surely they were in short supply because they were out of manufacture and about to be unavailble???

They were in short supply due to a factory fire if I recall (or was that Michelin? [&:])

In the owners manual it explains why you need to change the tyres if there is a difference in wear over a certain amount - it is due to the PSM system being fooled that you are in a constant state of loss of control due to miss-matched tyre sizes.

Of course if you don't have PSM (only some 986's I guess) - it shouldn't be a problem...

Because Conti stopped making the original N rating, owners with only 2 worn tyres were having to buy 4 newer ones to keep the same N rating all round. You bought the two that were worn out, Porsche paid for the other 2. This was also at the time when Michelins were like rocking horse poo due to he factory fire as Mark said.

Had the same problem as you the rears where needing replaced and when i went to get them Conti had stopped making the NO as Porsche had moved on and specified N1 They where not in the least concerned and would pay nothing towards the costs and said my warranty would be void if I mixed the two .So I now have an almost new set of fronts
Conti Sport 205 /55/ZR 17 NO 91Y I put on a new set of Conti Sport 3 N1 £500 from KFit found them the cheapest any where . I did track down a set of rears at the time 235/50./17 96 Y NO but had been lying around on a shelf for 6 years so declined the offer .If it is of interest I still have the tyres sitting in my garage and if you can use the rears there is a bit of live left in them you can have them for £40 +carriage the fronts are as new £100 + carriage

How on earth do you get to 20k with any tread left? Is it me? I managed 16k all round with my 2.5, rather less with my 3.2S and because of punctures (1 on each axle) I haven't got a definitive answer for my 3.4S, but I reckon the rears would have been shot at approx. 18k.

Ian - I bought the car at 8 months old &10k miles with a new set of tyres fitted. So I've actually got through the rears in only 9k miles!!!!!

My Continentals did 15,000 rear and 29,000 front including trip around "The Ring". Only changed fronts as they were 9yrs. old! Difficult to beat Micheldever north of Winchester for prices. 2/225by40ZR18Conti Sports £215.
